Olly: the web-connected robot that converts pings to odors

What if there were a way to add smells to the things you see every single day on the internet? To some, just the thought of that there scenario would induce nausea. To others -- primarily those who spend their days Googling various rose gardens around the globe -- it just might be the extra dimension to surfing that they've been waiting for. If you happen to find yourself tucked into that second camp, we'd like to introduce you to Olly, the web-connected robot that's capable of emitting smells based on inputs from the 'net. The critter was dreamed up by Tim Pryde and the folks surrounding the Don-8r (Foundry, if you're curious), and while there's currently no way to purchase one, instructions are forthcoming to produce your own with a 3D printer. In fact, it's recommended that users build a few, stack 'em up and connect different inputs (Twitter, Instagram, your mum's vegetarian cooking blog) to each one. It's the perfect cacophony... or the perfect disaster, depending on your browsing habits.

[Thanks, Tim]

Cain defends ad with smoking campaign manager (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain said Sunday that an Internet ad featuring his campaign manager smoking conveyed a message about letting "people be people" and was not intended to suggest that smoking is cool.

The video went viral this month with some 1 million clicks on Cain's campaign website. The ad shows Cain's top adviser, Mark Block, taking a deep drag from a cigarette and slowly exhaling into the camera.

"I'm not a smoker. But I don't have a problem if that's his choice," Cain said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"So let Herman be Herman. Let Mark be Mark. Let people be people. This wasn't intended to send any subliminal signal whatsoever," the candidate said.

Cain, who was diagnosed with liver and colon cancer in 2006 and has said he's been cancer-free since 2007, was chided about the ad by his interviewer, Bob Schieffer, a bladder cancer survivor.

"Mark Block smokes. That's all that ad says," Cain said. "We weren't trying to say it's cool to smoke. You have a lot of people in this country that smoke. But what I respect about Mark as a smoker ... he never smokes around me or smokes around anyone else. He goes outside."

Cain said the video was meant "to be informative. If they listen to the message where he said America has never seen a candidate like Herman Cain, that was the main point of it. And the bit on the end, we didn't know whether it was going to be funny to some people or whether they were going to ignore it or whatever the case may be."

Cain said he understood the objection and that about 30 percent of the feedback the campaign had received to the video was similar to Schieffer's.

Schieffer pressed Cain to send an anti-smoking message on the show. Cain complied.

"Young people of America, all people, do not smoke. It is hazardous and it's dangerous to your health. Don't smoke. I've never smoked and I have encouraged people not to smoke," he said.

Bachmann exaggerates directive in her criticism (AP)

DAVENPORT, Iowa ? Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Friday the Obama administration is striking all references to Islam from Justice Department training manuals, exaggerating a directive from federal officials to evaluate procedures for religious and cultural sensitivity.

Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, equated the effort to strike offensive references to Islam from material to removing suspicion of Islamic terrorism from department policy.

A conservative popular with tea party activists and evangelical conservatives, she later linked President Barack Obama with "4,400 American lives" lost in Iraq. However, the death toll in the 8-year-old war that began under President George W. Bush had already reached 4,229 when Obama was inaugurated in 2009. It now stands at no fewer than 4,481.

As she campaigned in Iowa, now the focus of her effort to win the Republican nomination, Bachmann accused the administration of making changes in training manuals under pressure from pro-Islam groups with terrorist links.

"And now Obama is allowing terror suspect groups to write the FBI's terror training manual," she told about 75 Republican activists in an eastern Iowa hotel conference room.

The FBI has not removed Islam from training material, said an FBI official who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter and requested anonymity.

The FBI has been conducting a comprehensive review of its training materials after it was revealed that what officials termed an inaccurate description of Islam, one that linked the religion to terrorism, was being used in some of the bureau's training programs. Last month, FBI officials said the agency was undertaking the review in light of an analyst's criticism of Islam during a lecture last spring.

Deputy Attorney General James Cole said last week he had asked that all aspects of the department be broadly re-evaluated for "sensitivity for all peoples of faith" in its training efforts.

"Examples include the efforts of our law enforcement components to ensure that their interactions with the community ? whether in responding to an attack on a mosque or arresting a suspect in a counter-terrorism investigation ? convey a sense of basic respect to the rule of law and the rights of all who have made this nation their home," Cole said.

In her remarks Friday, Bachmann broadly painted the effort as trying to remove the link between Islam and anti-American terrorism sponsored by radical Islamic extremists.

"And so now the White House has scrubbed all Islamic terms from the national counterterrorism strategy. The White House has removed all Islamic terms from the Pentagon's report on the Fort Hood shooting. And now, Obama is allowing terror suspect groups to write the FBI's terror training manual," she said.

The White House declined to respond to Bachmann's criticism.

In an interview with CNN on Friday, Bachmann said Obama's foreign policies were worse than his economic ones and linked Obama to the war's overall death toll as well as its cost.

"Under Barack Obama's watch, we've expended $805 billion to liberate the people of Iraq and, more importantly, 4,400 American lives," she said.

Bachmann is on the first leg of a three-day campaign trip to the leadoff caucus state.

Oil jumps 3 percent on positive US, European news (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil is climbing on positive economic news for the U.S. and Europe.

Benchmark crude rose $2.71, or 3 percent, at $92.90 per barrel in New York on Thursday. Brent crude rose $2.67, or 2.5 percent, to $111.58 in London.

Prices soared after European leaders announced an agreement to reduce Greece's debt and head off a default. In the U.S., the government said the economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the July-September quarter. That's the strongest growth this year and quieted concerns that the country is headed for another recession.

At the pump, retail gasoline prices rose to a national average of $3.444 per gallon.

No filter required for Rosie O'Donnell's new show (AP)

NEW YORK ? Rosie O'Donnell isn't shying away from controversy on her new Oprah Winfrey Network talk show.

Since the variety program's premiere on Oct. 10, O'Donnell has tackled topics from her renewed, menopausal sex drive to police brutality at the Occupy Wall Street protests.

"I'm going to talk about things that matter as well as entertaining fun things. But we're not going to leave stuff out. We're going to talk about what's current ? what's happening and what people are talking about in real life," O'Donnell said in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday.

O'Donnell's outspokenness about the Iraq War led to her abrupt exit on "The View," and her no-holds-barred attitude may have landed her a few high-profile enemies, but the comedian's new boss embraces her lack of filter.

"Oprah is so supportive," said O'Donnell, 49. "She said, `Trust your instincts, go with your gut, you know what to do, trust yourself.' And that's what I've been doing."

"The Rosie Show," a mash up of celebrity interviews, standup comedy, musical acts, games and reality TV, has garnered mixed reviews and lackluster ratings. But O'Donnell remains optimistic.

"We're going slow and steady," she said. "It's a marathon, not a sprint. And it's Oprah Winfrey, so I would not bet against her. That's for sure."

Turkey struggles to shelter thousands after quake (Reuters)

ERCIS Turkey (Reuters) ? Turkey struggled to provide shelter on Wednesday to tens of thousands left homeless by an earthquake that killed nearly 500, and rescue teams began taking painful decisions to call off searches for those buried alive.

A 27-year-old woman was pulled out alive from a collapsed building in Ercis, the town hit hardest.

At another crumpled building in the town, rescue workers who had worked non-stop for more than 48 hours switched off their generators and lights, convinced no one was left alive.

Seconds later, they received word that someone trapped below had made contact on a mobile phone.

"There are three people trapped under there. When we lifted a concrete slab, the phone must have been able to get reception," said one rescue worker, as the lights were turned back on and his team returned to their job.

But hopes of finding more survivors were fading as time passed and temperatures fell to freezing, and attention was shifting to the Herculean task of providing shelter to the victims.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said the death toll from the quake that struck mountainous Van province near the Iranian border stood at 461, with 1,352 people injured.

Sunday's 7.2 magnitude quake, Turkey's strongest in a decade, has spurred the government to request foreign aid, including from Israel despite tensions between the two.

The aid is to house families, amid growing complaints of a lack of tents and other supplies.

The governor of Van province said 3,000 buildings had collapsed or were made useless after the quake hit the region bordering Iran. He said damage was worst in outlying villages.

He estimated that 600,000 people had been "affected" by the quake, but said that did not mean all needed temporary accommodation. The exact number of homeless remained unclear.

Some desperate survivors fought among themselves for tents distributed by relief workers.

The Turkish Red Crescent said 17 trucks carrying food, blankets, carpets and warm clothes were looted, according to state-run Anatolian news agency.

"Some residents with no damage in their homes are unable to go back because of the aftershocks. That is why everyone wants tents. We estimate the total number of people affected is 600,000. To provide tents to this amount of people in one or two days is something no country would be able to do," Van provincial Governor Munir Karaloglu said.

"After the search and rescue efforts our biggest problem is housing. Our biggest need is tents for those citizens whose houses have completely collapsed," he told a news conference.

RESCUED

In Ercis, Gozde Bahar, an English teacher, was pulled out alive from the rubble. As she was being transported to hospital her heart briefly stopped. She was in critical condition.

"Of course I still have hope," Bahar's fiance, Hasan Gurcan, 29, said, looking dazed as he relayed the news on his mobile.

The rescue on Tuesday of a baby girl called Azra, born prematurely 14 days earlier, also lifted spirits.

"We have hope. There are always miracles. Normally, we do not expect anyone to survive after 72 hours but people have survived longer than that before," said a rescue official standing by the collapsed building where Azra was found.

But a senior rescue official told Reuters: "We have reached the bottom of the wreckage and searches are now over in the center of Van."

Having started out by saying Turkey could handle the disaster alone, Erdogan's government put out requests on Tuesday to 30 countries, including Israel, for emergency materials including prefabricated housing, tents and containers.

Israel, whose ties with Turkey hit rock bottom after Israeli commandos killed nine Turks on board a Gaza-bound flotilla last year, immediately said it was launching an airlift of supplies, starting with a shipment of prefabricated homes on Wednesday.

On a main street in Van rescue workers pulled out the dead body of a woman in her 20s from the flattened remains of a seven-storey apartment block.

"Our bride, our angel has gone," said a woman at the scene as the corpse was brought out, sealed in a body bag and taken away in an ambulance.

"We don't think there are any more bodies inside this wreckage," an official from the Ankara civil defense union said.

A woman named Emine said her family was sleeping in a car rather than in their home, its walls cracked by the earthquake.

"It's impossible to live in tents in Van. Look how cold it is and it is only October and now snow is on its way. We have a two-year-old child. What are we going to do with him?" she said.

At a makeshift field hospital in a sports hall outside Ercis, wounded and sick patients lay groaning on mattresses.

Orhan Acar, 30, was looking for his missing brother, Coskun, 25, who was in the center of Ercis when the quake struck.

"I have been looking for him the whole time since the quake but my hope is diminishing as time goes by," he said.

The disaster is one more curse for Kurds, the dominant ethnic group in the impoverished southeast, where more than 40,000 people have been killed in a three-decade-long separatist insurgency.

China to Launch Spacecraft On First Docking Test Flight in November (SPACE.com)

China will launch an unmanned spacecraft in November to make the country's first in-space docking, state media reported Wednesday (Oct. 26).

The Shenzhou 8 mission is set to launch early next month Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. The spacecraft is due to dock with the robotic Tiangong-1 module, which was launched separately in September. That craft is a prototype space lab, part of China's long-term goal of building its own manned space station in orbit.

The Tiangong 1-Shenzhou 8 maneuver will be China's first spacecraft docking. It's a necessary step toward assembling a larger space station.

In preparation for the launch, Shenzhou 8 and its carrier rocket, an upgraded Chinese Long March-2F, were transferred to the launch pad this morning, state news agency Xinhua reported. The vehicle took two hours to travel almost a mile (1,500 meters) along a 66-foot wide (20 meter) railway from its assembly and testing center.

Final testing of the spacecraft is set to take place over the coming days, Lu Jinrong, the launch center's chief engineer, told Xinhua. The main assembly and testing of the spacecraft and rocket system is complete, he said.

Lu said the Tiangong 1 ("Heavenly Palace") module is performing well in space, and is ready for the docking test. If the upcoming mission is successful, it will be followed by two more docking missions with the Shenzhou 9 and Shenzhou 10 spacecraft, yet to launch.

Ultimately, China hopes to build a 60-ton space station by 2020. The nation is only the third, behind Russia and the United States, to independently launch people to space.

Chicago Grocery Store Expansions to Eliminate Food Deserts, Create 2,000 Jobs (ContributorNetwork)

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and first lady Michelle Obama announced several major grocery store chains will be opening 36 grocery stores in neighborhoods around Chicago. The stores will help eliminate "food deserts" in the city and will also help create more than 2,000 new jobs for Chicagoans.

Supervalu, Roundy's Supermarkets, Wal-Mart and Aldi's have agreed to open 17 new locations. Additionally, Walgreens has also decided to expand 19 of its locations to offer fresh food. With this announcement, here are facts about food deserts and the steps Chicago and Mayor Emanuel have taken to reduce this problem:

* According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable foods that make up a healthy diet like vegetables, fruits, milk and whole grains.

* More than 23 million people live in food deserts, notes the Department of Agriculture. These areas often include urban neighborhoods and rural towns.

* Residing in a food desert can lead to health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease due to the lack of affordable and healthy food options.

* The Chicago Sun-Times reported Chicago's food desert has decreased by 40 percent over the past five years, from about 632,974 people to 384,954 people.

* Of the nearly 384,000 people, about 124,000 are children and Chicago's food desert lies in predominantly African-American communities.

* Yahoo! News reported that in mid-June, Mayor Emanuel met with several CEOs from some of the nation's biggest grocery chains to discuss eliminating food deserts in the city.

* Food deserts in the city cover the neighborhoods of North Lawndale, Chatham, Douglas, Englewood, Roseland and West Pullman.

* Tackling the problem of food deserts has long been a major goal of Mayor Emanuel, who, during his election campaign, spoke about his plans to eliminate the issue, according to CBS Local.

* The mayor's initial plan involved engaging small and local grocery stories, encouraging communities to plant gardens, and developing public-private partnerships.

* Emanuel's and Obama's recent announcement includes piloting five new farmers markets on the city's west side over the next two years.

* Obama is also encouraging other mayors to follow Chicago's lead to end food deserts in their city's by bringing healthy and affordable food options to underserved residents, reported Bloomberg Businessweek.

Rachel Bogart provides an in-depth look at current environmental issues and local Chicago news stories. As a college student from the Chicago suburbs pursuing two science degrees, she applies her knowledge and passion to both topics to garner further public awareness.

Hells Angels Gang Fight With Vagos Motorcycle Club Results In Two Dead, Several Wounded

Two people died, eight suffered gun shot wounds and dozens have been arrested in what authorities are calling "the most severe clash" in a decade between two California biker groups, reports Reuters -- and it all started over Starbucks coffee.

On Saturday, members of the San Jose, Calif., chapter of the motorcycle gang Hells Angels are set to attend the second funeral in as many months for a fallen member of their group. The death of Steve Tausan is the culmination of almost two years of violent tension between Hells Angeles and competing motorcycle gang The Vagos. Security is tight for Tausan's funeral, reports SF Gate, and police hope to stem the tide of growing biker violence.

Mounting tensions between the Hells Angels and Vagos motorcycle clubs erupted in January 2010, when members of each club fought each other over territory at a Starbucks cafe in Santa Cruz, Calif. Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark analyzed the situation for Reuters, saying, "It was all about who would be allowed to hang out at the Starbucks downtown... Only in Santa Cruz would you have biker wars over who's going to control pumpkin spice lattes." In this case, it was the Vagos who were encroaching on turf that had been considered part of Hells Angels territory.

The fight spread to other states and continued to escalate. In August 2010, 27 members of the Vagos and the Hells Angels were arrested in Arizona for taking part in a shoot out that resulted in at least five wounded victims. According to CBS News, the violent confrontation took place shortly after the Vagos moved in nearby to a house owned by the Hells Angels. At least 50 rounds of ammunition were exchanged between the two gangs during a house party, reports CBS affiliate KPHO.

The violence crossed state lines again and turned deadly in September 2011. A Hells Angels leader named Jeffrey "Jethro" Pettigrew, chapter president of the San Jose California Hell's Angels, was shot to death on the floor of a Nevada casino, reports the San Jose Mercury News. He and thousands of other bikers were in Sparks, Nevada for the annual "Street Vibrations" biker festival when a skirmish between the Hells Angels and the Vagos erupted on the floor of the John Ascuaga's Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks. In addition to Pettigrew, two Vagos members were wounded but taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to the Mercury News.

The next day, another motorcyclist was shot in the stomach by someone driving a car, reports ABC News. The second shooting prompted the city of Sparks to declare a state of emergency and cancel the remainder of the "Street Vibrations" festival, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

The final tragedy took place at Pettigrew's funeral on October 15, 2010, where Hells Angels biker Steve Tausan was fatally shot by a fellow member. According to Reuters, Tausan and several others confronted member Steve Ruiz because of "his perceived failure to have protected Pettigrew during the Nugget casino brawl." Ruiz is believed to have shot Tausan during the conflict, and he has been evading the authorities ever since.

It is Tausan's life the Hells Angels will be remembering on Saturday -- hopefully without incident.

Killer whales treat skin with a tropical vacation

In a little over a month, Antarctic killer whales trek from their chilly residence to the warm waters off the coast of South America and back, researchers have found. The whales spend their "tropical vacation" letting their skin slough off, replacing the old with new.

"It was a surprise to us that they undertook this rapid migration to the warm tropical waters," study researcher John Durban, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told LiveScience. "It's like swimming from New York to London and back in a month."

This fast-paced migration seems to be an adaptation to the cold waters of the Antarctic, which have ample food for the whales but can quickly strip the heat from their skin and stop the whales from regenerating and shedding their outer layers. This is the first migration of killer whales that researchers have observed.

Story: SeaWorld performing killer whales are slaves, group says

"The Antarctic area is a challenging place to live, and they have to move out of the Antarctic to regenerate skin," Durban said. "We suspect it's something that they all have to do. They may even have to do it once a year." [ Image Gallery: Life at the South Pole ]

Tropical vacation
The killer whales in the South Pole's icy waters are called "type B" and have gray coloration in addition to black-and-white splotches on their skin. Their white areas are often stained yellow from an algal species that grows on their skin in the Antarctic's frigid waters.

The researchers initially tagged 12 Antarctic killer whales with GPS devices. About half lost their tags in the first three weeks, but the remainder traveled north to the Atlantic Ocean off South America. They moved from waters averaging about minus 28.6 degrees Fahrenheit to those of about 75.6 degrees F.

Due to the cold conditions of Antarctica, the researchers had a limited field season in which they can tag the whales. The tags were able to follow the whales from Feb. 4 to April 20 before they stopped working. During that period, several groups of whales left for their warm-water destination at different times. Duran said that the whales probably just do this trip when needed, rather than at a distinct time of year.

Each of the tagged whales, if given enough tracking time, eventually made their way north into the Atlantic Ocean. They traveled just far enough to reach the tropical waters off South America, where they slowed their pace slightly, still heading north. Eventually they turned back toward the South Pole. Round trip their vacation covered more than 5,000 ocean-faring miles in about 40 days.

Shedding skins
Researchers had noticed that the killer whales' yellow tint seemed to come and go, often whole family groups of whales would be perfectly white, but others would be stained yellow like a cigarette smoker's teeth. Durban suggests that these whales may travel north to warmer waters in groups to slough off their yellow skins without freezing, returning to the Antarctic waters a pristine white, only to pick up more algae and turn yellow again.

Other marine Antarctic animals are either large enough to keep warm in the frigid Antarctic waters (like blue whales) or can move into warmer waters (like beluga whales, which swim into estuaries to shed their skins). Other animals, like seals, can haul themselves out of the water to shed their skins.

Lots of other marine Antarctic animals make a tropical trek, but their main intentions seem to be either feeding or giving birth to their young. Perhaps these other marine animals use this time to shed their skin, so they don't make a separate trip, Durban said.

The study was published Oct. 25 in the journal Biology Letters.

USDA Forest Service ? Southern Research Station

Current state of knowledge on an important forest pest

ASHEVILLE, NC The USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station (SRS) today announced the publication of a new synthesis of research on the southern pine beetle, a native bark beetle that impacts both the economic and ecological well-being of the forests of the southern United States.

Southern pine beetle is the most destructive forest pest in the Southern United States, causing more than $60 million in damage and lost timber income annually. The most recent outbreak of the insect (1999-2003) caused over $1.5 billion in damages across eight states. Changes in forests from tree death caused by the bark beetles can impact water supplies from forested watersheds as well as wildlife habitat.

Edited by SRS Assistant Director for Research Kier Klepzig and Texas A&M University Professor Robert Coulson, Southern Pine Beetle II updates the first synthesis published in 1980 by SRS researcher Robert Thatcher and others and proceedings from an integrated pest management research symposium published in 1985.

"In the 30 years since the last synthesis, the forest environment for southern pine beetle changed significantly," says Klepzig. "Industrial ownership declined, people moved into the wildland-urban interface, and recreational demand on forests expanded. The research arena has also changed dramatically over the last three decades. Advances in molecular, microscopy and landscape sciences have facilitated important new discoveries about the biology, ecology and management of southern pine beetle."

Southern Pine Beetle II consists of five basic sections covering ecology, impact, silviculture and management, treatment tactics and strategies, and integrated pest management. The authors who contributed individual chapters to the book are recognized authorities in their areas. The book is intended for managers, researchers, educators, students, and the interested public.

"Beyond their economic importance, bark beetles are fascinating organisms," says Klepzig. "The southern pine beetle is among the most thoroughly studied forest insects; this publication represents the current state-of-the-art knowledge base for this species."

SRS provided the funding for Southern Pine Beetle II, with contributions from the Forest Service Southern Region, Forest Health Protection, SPB Prevention and Restoration Program.
