Members of the Petroleum Security Coordinating Committee (PSCC) has toured the Jubilee Oil Field off Cape Three Points in the Western Region to familiarize themselves with security operations in the field.

The visit enabled the committee to have first hand information and knowledge about the logistical and security challenges related to the production of oil in the country.

After inspecting the installations and the security arrangements at the field the Committee said it was satisfied with the arrangements and commended the Ghana Navy and other security agencies for their work.

?The committee has confidence in the steps taken by the Ghana Navy and other security services to protect the jubilee field and its assets?, Brigadier-General Charles Mankatah, Coordinator of the Committee told journalists at the Takoradi Airport on arrival from the tour on Friday.

He said it was proper that the Navy had prevented fishermen from operating closer to the installations especially the Floating, Production, Storage and offloading (FPSO) Kwame Nkrumah, since it was an essential equipment in the oil industry.

Gen Mankatah cautioned fishermen to appreciate the dangers in operating closer to the installations and appealed to them to avoid fishing near the exclusion zone.

He said the Committee plans to work closely with the Western Regional Security Committee to intensify its educational drive at the fishing communities to enable fishermen appreciate the need for them to stay away from the installations.

?In the oil and gas industry, security and safety issues remain top of mind always and it?s not out of place that we undertake such routine visits to appraise ourselves of developments and operation in the field?.

The Petroleum Security Coordinator was full of praise for Tullow Ghana Limited (TGL), the major operator of the Jubilee Field for its high level of environmental health standards exhibited by personnel on the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah.

Welcoming the committee from the tour, Mr Joseph Klemesu, Takoradi General Manager of TGL, said the field has been operating actively for nearly two years ?and for us as operators, we welcome the views of all the critical partners who play significant roles to ensure our success?.

The PSSC is a state body comprising security and Civil Services members tasked with ensuring the security of the Jubilee field?s operations.

'Nasdaq's Facebook IPO compensation plan inadequate'

NEW YORK: Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's proposed $62 million compensation plan for the fallout from the Facebook IPO is "inadequate to address the magnitude of Nasdaq's unprecedented failures", UBS Securities LLC said in a letter to US regulators.

UBS Securities, an arm of Swiss bank UBS AG, said it alone lost over $350 million when the lack of timely order confirmations due to Nasdaq technical malfunctions during the IPO caused UBS's systems to re-enter orders multiple times.

UBS also said the types of claims for trading losses that Nasdaq agrees to compensate "should be expanded to include the full extent of losses caused by Nasdaq, and that the requirement that participants in the program release other legitimate claims they may have against Nasdaq is fundamentally unfair".

"Simply put, Nasdaq's proposal to pay $62 million in the aggregate for all Facebook-related claims is woefully inadequate," UBS said in the letter to the US Securities and Exchange Commission dated Aug. 22.

The idea of hiding the controls to give priority to content may make sense on mobile, where screen space is so limited, but it doesn?t make that much sense on a large screen, especially if users have to work harder to access hidden features. For instance, to expose the URL bar or the list of tabs in the browser you will need to click the right button of the mouse. The back button is not visible either, but if you hover on the left hand side of the screen, it becomes visible.

LAPTOP: If you are in Windows 8?s desktop environment and want to launch a new desktop application, you must return to the tile-based Start screen to click a shortcut. One could argue that going to a different screen is no more time consuming that opening up a Start menu that overlays on top of the screen. Was Microsoft really wrong to remove the ?Start menu?

Budiu:?The advantage of the overlaid menu is that it preserves context. Cognitively, there?s more of a burden when you have to switch context twice (desktop->start screen; start screen -> desktop). There are reasons to force users to switch contexts, especially in the tablet or phone environment, where screen real-estate is a lot more expensive and a menu is forced to use only part of the (already-small) screen. In that situation, a separate page makes better use of the small screen space.

There are fewer reasons for a separate page on a desktop ? the start menu is a cheaper interaction than the start page. Microsoft probably does it for the sake of consistency ? they want you to start an app in the same way, regardless of whether you are in the desktop environment on a PC or laptop, or in the Metro environment on a PC or on a tablet, or on a mobile phone.

For the PC case, I think that if you are going to have two environments, consistency is important, because otherwise people will always have to keep track of which action to use in which environment ? which is an extra burden on their memory. So although the start menu is the cheaper solution (in terms of interaction cost), not using it in the desktop environment is probably the right thing to do, given the choices already made by the Metro interface.

LAPTOP:?The Windows 8 Switcher displays each Modern style app as its own thumbnail but folds all the desktop apps into a single thumbnail because it considers the desktop itself to be an app. Is this a usability problem?

Budiu:?It is confusing, because users have to remember what they?re running in the desktop and go back to that app to resume editing a document in Word, for instance, or creating a chart in Excel. In general, switching between apps is costly for the users ? you have to go to the start page, then select the app, and then, for those apps running in the desktop, go to desktop and select it from there. Compare that with older versions of Windows ? just one click was needed to choose the running app from the task bar.

LAPTOP:?When using Windows 8 with a mouse, you must hover for half a second over the upper left or right corners of the screen to bring up key menus (the Switcher, the Charms menu). Does hovering slow the user down?

Hovering before using a menu does slow users down, but that?s not the major problem. The fact that the menus are hidden is primarily what slows users down ? remember that what?s out of sight is out of mind. In our studies with mobile devices we found that whenever a menu was not in plain view, even users who knew about the existence of that menu (that is, they had discovered it in the past) didn?t use it as much or took a longer time to think to use it than if the menu options were all visible. So it?s not only the hovering that slows users down ? it?s the lack of visibility that makes these menus less available.

These hidden menus also have zero affordances on the desktop, which makes them hard to discover for the first time. And even if you discovered where to click, being able to correctly remember which menu goes with location on the screen will require a fair amount of practice and continuous usage.

And yet another problem of these menus in the left and right corners is that they interfere with scroll arrows in some apps. The scroll arrows at the bottom of the screen are very close to the bottom corners of the screen, which are supposed to expose the menus. In general, it looks like the corners of the screen (the top, too, presumably, since this is how you close the app) are no longer good places to position controls.

In Israel, speculation rises of pending attack on Iran's nuclear facilities

A flurry of public statements and anonymous quotes to Israeli media over the past week has raised speculation that an Israeli attack could come before the U.S. presidential election in November.

The government appears to be readying the country for war by issuing gas masks, building underground bomb shelters and testing an early-warning system for missiles.

The Israeli home-front defense minister said he had worked to ensure the nation was ready for a monthlong war ?on multiple fronts.?

On Friday, the atmosphere grew more heated with sharp comments from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who called Israel's existence an ?insult to all humanity.?

Analysts in the United States and Israel are divided on whether the escalating war of words foreshadows an imminent attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Some say Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is bluffing in hopes of forcing President Barack Obama to issue an ultimatum to Iran that America would do the job itself later.

Although Obama has declared flatly that the U.S. won't allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon, analysts suggest Netanyahu is looking for a deadline on abandoning talks and resorting to military action.

Others argue the Israeli leader appears to be laying the case for unilateral Israeli action over the objections of Washington and the majority of Israeli public opinion.

This view holds that Netanyahu thinks he cannot rely on Obama for help now or later, and that he can't afford to wait for a friendlier Romney administration to back him up or do the bombing itself.

A new war in the Middle East would be deeply unpopular among American voters. Even talk of an imminent conflict with Iran could spike gas prices and unsettle the financial markets, possibly worsening the already standstill economy weeks before the November election.

The White House has tried to say as little as possible about the prospect of an Israeli strike or what it might do if talks over Iran's disputed nuclear program ? now at an impasse ? completely fall apart.

The Israelis are using the leverage of the U.S. presidential election to seek an explicit statement from Obama that the United States would launch its own attack as early as next year if the talks collapse, analysts and former officials in both the United States and Israel said.

?They are aiming for a specific thing,? said Georgetown University scholar Colin Kahl, formerly the Obama administration's top Pentagon policy adviser on the Middle East. ?They may be trying to push the Obama administration into a much greater declaration of red lines, an even more declarative statement about the use of force.?

Asher Susser of Tel Aviv University's Center for Middle Eastern Studies agreed, saying, ?If the United States makes such a statement, that would allow the Israelis to relax somewhat.?

Even if the timing is hazy, it's clear that some in the Israeli government do not think they can delay.

?We can't wait to find out one morning that we relied on the Americans but were fooled because the Americans didn't act in the end,? an unnamed Israeli official told the left-leaning daily newspaper Haaretz last week. The official is widely believed by analysts in Israel to be Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Israeli capabilities are at the heart of the debate over a military strike. Israeli leaders are concerned Iran will use more time to move its critical nuclear facilities out of reach of Israel's arsenal. That would leave only the United States with the unquestioned ability to destroy deeply buried Iranian facilities.

You wonder why no one responds to your updates, because they do not know you.

People who are familiar with you or your topic will respond to your updates because they feel a connection to you through work, school, friendship, family, or a similar interests.

I am not being too hard, because I respond to total stranger?s updates.

Here are some update annoyances.

Attacker stabbed, ran over victim in Florida church parking lot, police say

TAMPA -- An attacker stabbed a man and then ran over him, leaving his body to be found under the car by a maintenance worker at a South Tampa church, authorities said.

Police said the victim was Rolando Rivera-Arroyo, 73, who they said had no address or known family in the area.

Sometime around 4 a.m. Thursday, Rivera-Arroyo and another man, Michael Stuart Marston, 33, became engaged in a fight in the parking lot of Christ the King Church, police said.

Investigators did not say what led to the confrontation. But they described what would have been a night of crime for Marston ? starting with the burglary of a storage unit, leading to the killing, and culminating with a violent struggle against officers who tried to arrest him.

Police said they spotted Marston walking near the church, around 4:15 a.m. He had a broken finger, and police took him to the nearby Memorial Hospital.

Investigators then determined he was a suspect in the murder. When officers tried to arrest him at the hospital, "he violently fought them," a Tampa police spokeswoman said. None of the officers was injured.

Earlier in the day, as crime-scene tape was strung around the church parking lot, Rivera-Arroya's body could be seen lodged under a white Toyota sedan. A worker discovered it there around 5:45 a.m.

Investigators found an odd crime scene: What appeared to be blood stained the concrete past a pile of construction materials ? buckets, insulation and tiles ? scattered in the lot. A wheelchair was parked on the grass. It looked as if the confrontation began in the parking lot and moved to where the body was found in a carport in front of the church.

"Obviously, some kind of confrontation took place in the parking lot overnight," Lt. Mary O'Connor said during the investigation. "It's pretty awful."

Besides the second-degree murder charge, Marston also faces counts of littering, burglary of an unoccupied structure, petty theft, criminal mischief and obstructing or opposing an officer with violence, according to jail records.

Before the killing, police said, Marston had burglarized a storage area at his former wife's apartment. He stole various items and damaged property there, police said. The property was found scattered at the murder scene.

State records show Marston had no criminal history in Florida until this arrest. He was being held Friday morning in the Hillsborough County Jail without bail.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Melky Cabrera's 50-game suspension comes just as reliever Guillermo Mota is nearing his return to the Giants from a 100-game performance-enhancing drug penalty of his own.

Yes, San Francisco now accounts for two of the four suspensions this season under the major league drug program ? and suddenly the Giants are back in the spotlight for performance-enhancing drugs several years after the club had finally moved forward from the Mitchell Report and BALCO mess.

"Unfortunately, these things happen in baseball," manager Bruce Bochy said. "There's not a lot you can do about it. I guess the best thing we can do is keep educating players so these things don't happen. I can't dwell on these things."

Cabrera, the 28-year-old MVP of last month's All-Star game, was suspended 50 games Wednesday following a positive test for testosterone. That puts an abrupt end to what had been a remarkable regular season and throws the Giants' playoff hopes into doubt.

"Ultimately, it was just a bad decision," catcher Buster Posey said. "That's all I'm going to say."

Cabrera leads the National League with 159 hits, and is second in batting average behind Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen. Cabrera's penalty was the first for a high-profile player since last year's NL MVP, Ryan Braun, had his suspension overturned by an arbitrator last winter.

"My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used," Cabrera said in a statement released by the players' association. "I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down."

The Giants are no stranger to such cases.

Home run king Barry Bonds, who was in the stands for a 6-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday as the Giants played Day 1 of Cabrera's suspension, has long denied ever knowingly using steroids or performance-enhancing drugs and the 48-year-old slugger appealed his obstruction of justice conviction from April 2011 on one count of giving an evasive answer to a 2003 grand jury investigating illegal steroids distribution.

In the spring of 2010, former San Francisco outfielder Marvin Benard admitted he used steroids during the team's 2002 World Series season to deal with a nagging knee injury.

Benard was among the 85 players named in the Mitchell Report, handled by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, which was released in December 2007.

Specifically, he was named in sections on BALCO ? the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative ? as having obtained "the clear" and "the cream" from trainer Greg Anderson.

Now, the current Giants will try to make up for the lost production of the "Melk Man," as he became known.

The suspension would extend into the playoffs if the Giants advance.

"It happened, and now we move on," right fielder Hunter Pence said. "I know the program and I know they test us, and if we test positive we get a suspension. That's what happened. And now we play with what we've got."

Cabrera is batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs in his first season with San Francisco and is five hits shy of 1,000 in his big league career. Flashing bright orange spikes, he singled and hit a two-run homer off Texas pitcher Matt Harrison last month in the National League's 8-0 win in the All-Star game, earning MVP honors for the game and securing homefield advantage in the World Series for the National League.

"When I give up a homer, it's a bad pitch. I don't think it really helps them hit home runs or singles, doubles or triples," Harrison said. "It was a bad pitch over the plate. But it's going to cost him now. ... He's having to pay the consequences for it now. At least he was honest and came forward about it and said he took something he wasn't supposed to do."

Cabrera is set to become a free agent after this season, so he might have cost himself a big pay day for next season and beyond.

"It's disappointing. Obviously, Melky means a lot to all of us, was part of our championship and provided some really good moments here," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Cabrera, who spent 2005-09 in the Bronx. "It's something that everyone has to deal with and it's something baseball is trying to stay away from and it happened."

Cabrera could still win the NL batting title. He has 501 plate appearances, one less than the minimum required to win a batting championship for a player on a team playing 162 games. However, under 10.22(a) of the Official Baseball Rules, he would win the batting title if an extra hitless at-bat is added to his average and it remains higher than that of any other qualifying player.

He will miss the final 45 games of the regular season and serve the remainder of the suspension at the start of next season or during the postseason, depending on whether the Giants make the playoffs and how far they advance. If the Giants wanted him to become active in the middle of a playoff series, they would have to play a man short from the start of the series until the suspension ends because rosters can't be altered mid-series.

"We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing drugs from our game," the Giants said in a statement.

Mota received a 100-game suspension in May. He is eligible to return Aug. 28, barring rainouts, and began a minor league rehabilitation assignment Tuesday with the Giants' rookie team in Arizona.

It was not immediately known whether Cabrera's positive test occurred before the All-Star game, his first career selection. The union initially filed a grievance, which would have caused the case to go before an arbitrator, but then dropped it, a person familiar with the process said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that detail was not announced.

Cabrera told CSN Bay Area on July 27 that he had been tested for performance-enhancing drugs the previous week, though it's unknown whether the test he referenced resulted in the positive test.

Bochy broke the news to his team in a meeting about 90 minutes before the start of Wednesday's game after initially writing Cabrera into the lineup in left field and batting third. Bochy and general manager Brian Sabean met briefly with Cabrera.

"Melky, he was hurt by it," Bochy said. "It's obvious he was disappointed."

Drug-testing labs check urine for its ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone, which usually is 1 to 1 in adult males. If the lab notices any abnormality, it conducts an isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) test to determine whether the testosterone is exogenous, or came from outside the body.

In the other two major league suspensions this year, Philadelphia infielder Freddy Galvis and free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd also were penalized 50 games apiece. There have been 70 suspensions under the minor league drug program.

In mid-May, MLB and the players' union agreed to drop the 100-game suspension imposed on Colorado catcher Eliezer Alfonzo for a positive drug test because of the same procedural issues that came up in Braun's case. Alfonzo missed 48 games ? the final 15 of last season and the first 33 this year.

Braun's 50-game suspension for a positive test was overturned in February by arbitrator Shyam Das after Braun's lawyers argued his urine sample was not handled in the manner specified by baseball's drug agreement. Das, who had been baseball's permanent arbitrator since 1999, was fired this spring.

The Braun case led to revisions in the drug agreement between owners and the players' association to better define procedures for handling the urine samples.

Last December, slugger Manny Ramirez received a 50-game suspension for a second positive drug test. The 12-time All-Star signed a one-year minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics on Feb. 20, but was released in June per his request while playing for Triple-A Sacramento before even reaching the big leagues with the A's.

Ramirez retired from the Tampa Bay Rays in April 2011 rather than serve a 100-game suspension for a second failed drug test. The penalty was cut to 50 games because he sat out nearly all of last season.

Cabrera, who became a marketing phenomenon this year with nicknames like "Got Melk?" ''Melk Man" and "Melky Way," produced a 51-hit month in May. He batted .429 in May with three homers, five triples, seven doubles and 17 RBIs while hitting safely in 25 of 29 games. The 51 hits matched Randy Winn for most hits in a month since the club came to San Francisco in 1958.

Cabrera also set the San Francisco record for most hits in May, passing Hall of Famer Willie Mays' 49 from 1958.

Cabrera came to the Giants in a trade with Kansas City last November that sent left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to the Royals. Cabrera ? who signed a $6 million, one-year deal to avoid salary arbitration ? batted .305 with 44 doubles, 18 homers and 87 RBIs last season.

"We are a team. We're trying to make the playoffs," Pablo Sandoval said. "We're going to fight."

Harsh words for Obama mark end of Romney bus trip

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday delivered a harsh indictment of President Barack Obama's re-election strategy, accusing the president of running a "campaign of division and anger and hate."

"His campaign strategy is to smash America apart and then cobble together 51 percent of the pieces. If an American president wins that way, we all lose," Romney told a crowd of thousands standing outside the Ross County Court House in southern Ohio.

Romney referred to Vice President Joe Biden's remark to a heavily black audience in Virginia that the Republican ticket wanted to put people "back in chains" by repealing Wall Street regulations. Although he didn't cite other examples to support his harsh rhetoric, his campaign pointed to the controversial ad that linked Romney to a steelworker's wife's death from cancer and an Obama spokeswoman's suggestion that Romney might have committed a felony if he didn't tell the truth in federal filings about his activities with his former company.

The formal speech, a finale for a swing-state bus tour that started Saturday in Virginia with Romney's announcement of running mate Paul Ryan, drew immediate criticism from the Obama campaign, with spokesman Ben LaBolt saying that Romney's comments "seemed unhinged."

Romney was looking to refocus on his Democratic opponent after days of defending his new running mate and attempting to present a united front while still distancing himself from the Wisconsin congressman's controversial budget proposal. The presumptive GOP nominee also looked to go on the offensive on Medicare, arguing that Democrats have hurt the safety net program more than he and Ryan would.

Accusing Obama of turning away from hope and change, Romney tried to use Obama's own words against him and said the Democrat was making "a big election about small things," a line Obama used in 2008 to condemn negative attacks.

"His campaign and his surrogates have made wild and reckless accusations that disgrace the office of the presidency," Romney said. "This is what an angry and desperate presidency looks like."

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus amplified the criticism. "This operation is one of the most hateful, divisive operations that we have ever seen in this country. This president has not met the basic promises that he laid out to the American people," Priebus said on Fox News. "He is not a man of his word."

Romney's words echoed themes from the campaign trail, though his rhetoric was considerably harsher than usual. But the tone and setting ? he walked onto the stage outside the marble courthouse in Chillicothe to the theme from the movie "Rudy" and delivered his speech as the sun set and thousands cheered ? were clearly aimed at elevating the speech above a standard campaign rally.

"America deserves better," Romney said.

He also touched on Medicare, part of a push advisers say is designed to keep the Republicans on the attack instead of defending against the avalanche of Democratic criticism that came in the wake of Ryan joining the ticket.

"It allows us to go on the offense with voters," Romney campaign spokesman Kevin Madden said.

In a new ad, Romney says that he would restore $716 billion in Medicare money that was eliminated as part of Obama's health care overhaul. Ryan would have retained those cuts in his most recent budget proposal.

Romney has countered that his plan differs from Ryan's in some ways.

"The items that we agree on, I think, outweigh any differences there may be. We haven't gone through piece by piece and said, 'Oh here's a place where there's a difference,'" Romney told reporters Monday in Miami, the state with the largest population of seniors.

But Romney's aides again made clear Tuesday that Romney has no plans to spell out those differences.

"Romney and Ryan are running on the Romney plan now, so there is no difference in policy," said Ed Gillespie, a senior Romney strategist. "The only difference is between Romney-Ryan and Obama-Biden."

Ryan himself told Fox News on Tuesday, "I joined the Romney ticket."

Democrats were expected to continue tying the Republican ticket to the budget plans that Ryan has championed and that the Republican-led House has passed.

In Ohio, Romney held rallies in coal-rich eastern Ohio, in Zanesville and in Chillicothe, south of Columbus. He appeared with Sen. Rob Portman, who he had seriously considered for vice president, and with Gov. John Kasich.

The three men shared ice cream at Tom's in Zanesville, where Romney ordered his preference ? chocolate peanut butter ? as well as a flavor called "White House" that the store's employees urged him to try.

"All right, we'll have one White House and one chocolate peanut butter," Romney said. He set his order down on a table before shaking some hands.

When Romney turned back to the table, Kasich had already dug in ? to Romney's ice cream

Amused but peeved, Romney exclaimed, "My peanut butter!"

Burning Dryer Transition Ducts | Structure Tech Home Inspections

Last week I blogged about clothes dryer ducts, and this week I?m going to follow up with information on dryer transition ducts. ?As I mentioned last week, a?dryer transition duct is the flexible material that can be used to transition between the dryer and the duct. ?Transition?ducts should be used sparingly, stretched tight, not smashed, and replaced periodically. ? ?They?re allowed by the Minnesota State Mechanical Code, but they can?t be any longer than 8?, and they need to be?listed and labeled for the application. ?The key word is listed. ? If a dryer transition duct is listed, you?ll find the ?UL? logo somewhere on the package or product.

Today I?ll discuss the three most common materials used for dryer transition ducts, and I?ll cover some basic rules for keeping your dryer transition duct safe.

Plastic Ducts

Plastic dryer transition ducts are a potential fire hazard. ?They?re never UL listed, they can get clogged with lint, and they?ll burn. ?If you have one of these, replace it. ?I looked for one of these at Home Depot and Menards, but I couldn?t find one. ?Good. ?I still find plenty of them while inspecting houses though.

I tried lighting some paper on fire inside one of these plastic ducts to see how fast it would burn through, and the plastic itself actually caught on fire.

Foil Ducts

Foil dryer transition ducts are typically UL Listed, and they?re readily available at any home improvement store. ?While these products are allowed by code, I?ve heard that many municipal inspectors?won?t?allow them, and most manufacturers of clothes dryers don?t recommend them either.

I tried burning one of the UL Listed foil ducts by filling it up with shredded paper, then lighting the paper. ?Once the paper caught fire, I accelerated the burn by aiming the blower end of a wet/dry vac at the tube. ?Some people claim that these foil ducts are flammable, but that?s not true; there are two versions of the foil dryer transition ducts ? a listed and a non-listed version. ?That?s the listed version shown in the photo below. ?After heavy white smoke started pouring out the end, it took about 10 seconds for the flames to rip through the side.

Semi-Rigid Metal Ducts

Semi-rigid metal dryer transition ducts are available anywhere dryer duct materials are sold, but it?s almost impossible to find a UL Listed version of this. ?The strange thing is that these semi-rigid ducts seem to be universally accepted by building code officials, and they?re recommended by clothes dryer manufacturers. ?Everyone seems to like these, but they have their?drawbacks: they?puncture easily, they crush easily, they unravel easily, and they have very sharp edges. ?I repeat, very sharp edges.

After a ton of searching at local retailers and searching online, I couldn?t find a single UL Listed semi-rigid duct, so I concluded there was no such thing as a UL Listed semi-rigid metal duct.

But there is.

I sent out emails to several major clothes dryer manufacturers, asking what consumers are supposed to use for a dryer transition duct, because there doesn?t seem to be a UL listed semi-rigid duct. ?Finally, a very helpful person at Whirlpool by the name of Lee Herendeen sent me a link to just such a product, made by Lambro Industries, Inc.? After all the searching I had been doing, I was skeptical that this was the real thing, so I ordered one. ?It?s the real thing.

The photo below shows the UL listed semi-rigid duct from Lambro sitting next to a non-listed duct.

The UL listed duct was much stiffer than the non-listed duct, and was much more difficult to crush. ? To continue my comparison of transition ducts, I stuffed them both full of shredded paper, lit the paper on fire, then aimed the exhaust from a wet/dry vac in to the duct to simulate the air from a clothes dryer.

I started with the non-listed duct.

At about the 40 second mark, heavy smoke started to come out the back side of the duct. ?About 17 seconds later the fire burned through the duct.

The next test was to try the same thing with the UL Listed duct.

With this one, heavy smoke started coming out at about the 30 second mark, and it took about 27 seconds for the fire to burn through the duct. ?Of course these aren?t ?real life? tests of a dryer duct fire, but it?s interesting to compare the performance of the different materials.

Conclusions

Don?t use plastic for your dryer duct. ?It?s flammable.

Foil comes in a UL Listed flavor and is easy to work with, but it?s prohibited by many building code officials and clothes dryer manufacturers.

Semi-rigid aluminum is good, but it?s a hassle to work with. ?If you?re going to use semi-rigid, use the UL listed version.

Next year I might check out a product called DryerFlex. ?They claim their product offers the best of both worlds. ?We?ll see.
