Italy's comeback kid Berlusconi defends Mussolini

Vincenzo Pinto / AFP - Getty Images

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, seen giving a speech during a campaign rally in Rome Friday, appears to have shrugged off recent scandals.

By Claudio Lavanga, Producer, NBC News

ROME ? He is the comeback kid of Italian politics, but Silvio Berlusconi's attempt to revive his career is under the spotlight after he defended fascist wartime leader Benito Mussolini at a ceremony for victims of the Nazi Holocaust.?

The former prime minister said Mussolini's decision to echo Nazi Germany's anti-Jewish laws had been his "worst fault" as a leader "who in so many other ways did well."

He said: "It is difficult now to put yourself in the shoes of people who were making decisions at that time. Obviously the government of that time, out of fear that German power might lead to victory, preferred to ally itself with Hitler's Germany rather than opposing it."

The remarks, given?to reporters in Milan on Sunday, prompted outrage from many quarters in Italy and overseas.

?He has lost the plot," said David Patsi, president of the Italian school Dante Alighieri in Jerusalem and whose father was killed in a concentration camp. "He is an idiot. But I am not surprised. Sometime he even reminds me of Mussolini."

He added: "But I don?t think he is the problem. The problem is that a large number of Italians agree with him.??

That helps explain why Berlusconi could still make his comeback, despite a track record would have forced almost any other politician to retire from public life.

In November 2011, he was forced to resign as prime minister after it became clear that his denial of the economic crisis was bringing Italy to the brink of disaster.

In October last year, he was sentenced to four years in prison for an epic offshore tax fraud, put off pending appeals to higher courts.

And, if that weren't enough, he is still on trial for allegedly paying an underage exotic dancer for sex.

His popularity hit an all-time low and the 76-year-old with a net worth of almost $6 billion --?according to Forbes magazine -- might have been expected to retire to one of his many mansions.

But he was simply waiting for the chance to strike back in the flamboyant style that won him three terms as prime minister.

Following the resignation of Mario Monti -- the technocratic prime minister who replaced him in 2011 promising to reinvigorate Italy's languishing economy -- Berlusconi has done what he does best: He carpet-bombed the Italian media with guest appearances, clocking up an impressive 63 hours of airtime in only 21 days.

In essence, it's as if during the recent U.S. presidential election, former president George W. Bush was given more airtime than Barack Obama and Mitt Romney combined.

Crisis 'wasn't my fault'
Seems inconceivable, but then Italy has always been an exception in the Western world, and flamboyant and media-friendly Berlusconi, even as an outsider, draws a bigger audience than his closest competitors combined.

Officially, Berlusconi is not actually running as a candidate prime minister -- because this was the price it took to persuade the Northern League party to join?Berlusconi's People of Freedom party in a coalition.

But a good result in the elections could mean that all bets are off.

Karima el Marough, better known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer," was called to testify over allegations that former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi paid to have sex with her when she was still a minor. NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.

?Italy?s economic crisis wasn?t my fault. It was the consequence of the wider international crisis,? a defiant Berlusconi recently told a TV host, before he refused to apologize for previously denying the extent of the crisis.

It would seem to be an uphill task for Berlusconi to win the premiership for a fourth time -- in polls his coalition is trailing the center-left Democratic Party by at least 12 points.

But, after his TV onslaught, Berlusconi's bloc saw its poll rating rise by 3 percentage points.

Berlusconi 'very clever'

Italians are tired of painfully high unemployment rates, rising taxes, tax-evasion clampdowns and plummeting spending power.

But it remains to be seen whether they really believe Berlusconi when he claims that the economic crisis wasn't his fault and that his tax-cutting strategy is the solution.

?Berlusconi has been very clever. He stepped aside when the new government introduced very unpopular austerity measures and has come back in the limelight only now, saying that the cure was worse than the illness,? Maurizio Caprara, a journalist for the daily Corriere della Sera, said.

?Now he is trying to rally again his troops. Many became disillusioned following his many scandals, but many, as the polls show, may decide to give him one more try,? he added.

Monti recently called Berlusconi the "Pied Piper of Hamelin," who ?leads the mice to drown in the river, having fooled Italians three times already.?

And yet, at least according to his recently rising popularity, many Italians seem to find his tune irresistible.??

Sony scores big by hiring ex-Microsoft Kinect game developer George Andreas

Sony and Microsoft have been battling it out for years when it comes to games as the Xbox took on Sony's PlayStation?for the most part, the Xbox won the battle on its home turf in the US.? In terms of global units shipped up until 2013, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are estimated to have similar numbers of units sold, with the PS3 recently topping the Xbox 360 by about 1 million units according to some recent estimates by analysts.

Sony scores big by hiring ex-Microsoft Kinect game developer George Andreas

The arrival of the Kinect, however, added a whole new dimension to the "console wars" and helped Microsoft further cement itself as a power house in the game console business.

That isn't to say that Sony didn't have its own motion control device, but in terms of the marketplace, Sony's EyeToy has never had the same presence as the Kinect. Of course it helped that Microsoft had some good games to bundle with the Kinect. Games like Kinect Sports and Kinect Sports: Season 2 helped to drive up people?s fondness of the motion sensing peripheral from Microsoft.

In the middle of all the Microsoft Kinect insurgence was George Andreas.? He helmed various projects at Rare that played major roles in helping the Kinect to become a popular household Xbox peripheral.

Besides working on games for the Kinect, George Andreas also worked on the Kinect?hardware; so when the news came out today that he has left Microsoft to work with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe in their EyeToy studio in London, you can bet there were some pretty unhappy people at Microsoft.

There is no word at this point on exactly what Andreas will be doing, but some are hoping that he will return to developing some great games like he did when he was at Rare.

New arms for Iraq war's first quad amputee

On Facebook, he describes himself as a "wounded warrior...very wounded."

Brendan Marrocco was the first soldier to survive losing all four limbs in the Iraq War, and doctors revealed Monday that he's received a double-arm transplant.

Those new arms "already move a little," he tweeted a month after the operation.

Marrocco, a 26-year-old New Yorker, was injured by a roadside bomb in 2009. He had the transplant Dec. 18 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, his father said Monday.

Alex Marrocco said his son does not want to talk with reporters until a news conference Tuesday at the hospital, but the younger Marrocco has repeatedly mentioned the transplant on Twitter and posted photos.

"Ohh yeah today has been one month since my surgery and they already move a little," Brendan Marrocco tweeted Jan. 18.

Responding to a tweet from NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski, he wrote: "dude I can't tell you how exciting this is for me. I feel like I finally get to start over."

The infantryman also received bone marrow from the same dead donor who supplied his new arms. That novel approach is aimed at helping his body accept the new limbs with minimal medication to prevent rejection.

The military sponsors operations like these to help wounded troops. About 300 have lost arms or hands in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Unlike a life-saving heart or liver transplant, limb transplants are aimed at improving quality of life, not extending it. Quality of life is a key concern for people missing arms and hands ? prosthetics for those limbs are not as advanced as those for feet and legs.

"He was the first quad amputee to survive," and there have been four others since then, Alex Marrocco said.

The Marroccos want to thank the donor's family for "making a selfless decision ... making a difference in Brendan's life," the father said.

Brendan Marrocco has been in public many times. During a July 4 visit last year to the Sept. 11 Memorial with other disabled soldiers, he said he had no regrets about his military service.

"I wouldn't change it in any way. ... I feel great. I'm still the same person," he said.

The 13-hour operation was led by Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, plastic surgery chief at Johns Hopkins. It was the seventh double-hand or double-arm transplant done in the United States.

Lee led three of those earlier operations when he worked at the University of Pittsburgh, including the only above-elbow transplant that had been done at the time, in 2010.

Marrocco's "was the most complicated one" so far, Lee said in an interview Monday. It will take more than a year to know how fully Marrocco will be able to use the new arms.

"The maximum speed is an inch a month for nerve regeneration," he explained. "We're easily looking at a couple years" until the full extent of recovery is known.

While at Pittsburgh, Lee pioneered the immune-suppression approach used for Marrocco. The surgeon led hand-transplant operations on five patients, giving them marrow from their donors in addition to the new limbs. All five recipients have done well, and four have been able to take just one anti-rejection drug instead of combination treatments most transplant patients receive.

Minimizing anti-rejection drugs is important because they have side effects and raise the risk of cancer over the long term. Those risks have limited the willingness of surgeons and patients to do more hand, arm and even face transplants.

Lee has received funding for his work from AFIRM, the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine, a cooperative research network of top hospitals and universities around the country that the government formed about five years ago. With government money, he and several other plastic surgeons around the country are preparing to do more face transplants, possibly using the new immune-suppression approach.

Marrocco expects to spend three to four months at Hopkins, then return to a military hospital to continue physical therapy, his father said. Before the operation, he had been fitted with prosthetic legs and had learned to walk on his own.

He had been living with his older brother in a specially equipped home on New York's Staten Island that had been built with the help of several charities. Shortly after moving in, he said it was "a relief to not have to rely on other people so much."

The home was heavily damaged by Superstorm Sandy last fall.

Despite being in a lot of pain for some time after the operation, Marrocco showed a sense of humor, his father said. He had a hoarse voice from the tube that was in his throat during the long surgery and decided he sounded like Al Pacino. He soon started doing movie lines.

"He was making the nurses laugh," Alex Marrocco said.

(AP) ? Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown is under investigation for an alleged assault in a West Hollywood parking lot, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said early Monday.

Deputies responding to a report of six men fighting Sunday night found the scene clear, but were told by witnesses there had been a brief fight over a parking space.

"The altercation allegedly led to Chris Brown punching the victim," the department said in a statement released early Monday morning.

The "victim" wasn't identified, but the celebrity website TMZ, which first reported the fight outside the Westlake Recording Studio, said it also involved Frank Ocean, one of the top nominees at the Grammy Awards next month.

In a Twitter posting later, Ocean said he "got jumped by (Brown) and a couple guys" and suffered a finger cut.

It wasn't Brown's first problem in the run-up to the Grammys. His attack on singer Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 awards event overshadowed the show.

Last June, he was injured in a brawl with members of hip-hop star Drake's entourage at a New York nightclub.

No arrests were made. Brown was gone by the time deputies arrived but the department said the investigation is ongoing and Brown would be contacted later.

Email messages to Ocean's publicist and Brown's lawyer and representative were not immediately returned. A man answering the phone at the recording studio declined to comment.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Ray Rice has known nothing but winning since he came into the NFL.

For Frank Gore, it took a while.

Two running backs with contrasting styles and story lines will be on display at this Super Bowl, but they have one thing in common ? plenty of respect for each other.

"To battle through what he's been through? He's a warrior," Rice said Monday evening, shortly after the Baltimore Ravens arrived in the Big Easy. "Hats off to my man Frank."

Gore, the leading rusher for the San Francisco 49ers, also was generous with the praise.

"He does it all. I love to watch him," Gore said of his Ravens counterpart. "When I saw him in college, I knew he was going to be a pretty good back in the league."

They both are.

But, boy, they sure took different paths to get here.

The 29-year-old Gore has endured plenty of losses, personal heartache (losing his mother to kidney failure) and a startling string of injuries that might've broken a lesser man. He tore up both knees in college at the University of Miami, prompting him to wonder if "football wasn't for me." Shaking off the doubts, he was drafted by the 49ers, but needed major surgery on both shoulders after his rookie campaign. Later, he lost part of another season to a hip injury.

Even harder to take, Gore played on a series of bad teams. Really bad teams. His first six years in the league, the 49ers failed to post a winning record ? which was especially hard for him to take, considering he had known nothing but winning with the Hurricanes.

"It was tough, real tough," Gore said. "I would see some guys ? who are not here anymore ? after we lost, and they would just be like, 'Whatever.' I was not used to that. If we lost one game at Miami, it was like our season was over."

One of his teammates, fullback Bruce Miller, has noticed the determination in Gore's eyes as the team prepares to face the Baltimore Ravens in the title game Sunday.

"It means a lot to him," Miller said. "In meetings and at practice, you can see how intense and focused he is. He's worked hard for it."

For Rice, the road has been much smoother.

Since he was drafted in 2008 out of Rutgers, the Ravens have made the playoffs every season, including three trips to the ACC championship game. This season, they got over that hump with a major upset at New England.

"I've been blessed and fortunate," Rice said.

Rice is a slasher of a back, darting through the smallest of openings to break off big gains. He's rushed for more than 1,000 yards four years in a row and is just as valuable in the passing game, recording more than 60 receptions each of those seasons, as well.

In a November game at San Diego, he provided one of the most memorable plays of 2012. With the Ravens down by three and facing fourth-and-29, he hauled in a pass just past the line of scrimmage, swerved away from three defenders, broke a tackle that would have clinched the victory for the Chargers and lunged just beyond the first-down stripe for a 30-yard gain.

The Ravens kicked a tying field goal, then won the game in overtime.

Gore is a power back, someone who can churn out the tough yards between the tackles. That style has served him well; he's run for more than 1,000 yards six of the last seven seasons and become San Francisco's career leader in rushing touchdowns.

"We always credit Frank with the tough yards," Miller said. "He doesn't get the easy runs. It's up the middle, three or four yards a carry. But he just continues to move the chains. That's why we're here."

Despite their lofty numbers, both running backs are a bit overlooked heading into the title game.

In San Francisco, quarterback Colin Kaepernick and the pistol offense are all the rage. For Baltimore, much of the attention is focused on retiring linebacker Ray Lewis and quarterback Joe Flacco, who has finally escaped his playoff demons.

"When you look at the criticism that Flacco has been through, and you see what a young quarterback like Kaepernick is doing, I would make them the headlines, too," Rice said. "I'm just being honest."

But, chances are, Rice and Gore will have a significant impact on the outcome Sunday, especially since their rookie backups ? LaMichael James in San Francisco, Bernard Pierce in Baltimore ? emerged as major threats late in the season and playoffs, taking some of the load off the two starters.

"It keeps me fresh," Gore said. "Early in my career, I probably wouldn't have liked it. Now, it gets me ready for the fourth quarter. When the defense is wearing down, that's when I get going."

All the warm and fuzzy feelings will be put on hold in the Super Bowl.

But no matter who's hoisting the trophy at the end of the game, Gore and Rice will remain fans of each other.

"We don't have to hit each other," Rice quipped. "I'd like to win on Sunday. I don't want to see him do good on our defense. But any other time I watch Frank Gore do well, I'm happy for him."

michaelbiehness: Creative Imagination | Self Improvement, Faith ...

Imagination - HNBD

Imagination ? HNBD (Photo credit: HNBD)

Creative imagination is more than just active imagination. To be able to actively imagine things, to see and hear things in one?s mind, is an important ability. It doesn?t have to involve much creativity, though, does it? Daydreaming, for example, is a process of imagination. It can consist of an elaborate fantasy world, but one full of all the things that many people think about.

Creative imagination, then, has to include the ability not just to imagine things, but to imagine original things. It is seeing things that others don?t see, and coming up with new ideas. So how do you cultivate this?

<b>Creative Imagination 101</b>

First, exercise your basic imagination. It can be as simple as thinking in pictures more, or listening to music in your mind. Play little ?movies? in your mind, until you can watch them on command. This is a simple process, but for those of us that can?t easily do it naturally, it can take a lot of practice. Fortunately, it is not an unpleasant activity.

The second part of developing your creative imagination is to get more creative in your thinking and imagining. Start by paying attention to your creativity. Our subconscious minds give us more of what we pay attention to. Ignore creative aspects of your life, and you?re telling your subconscious they are unimportant. On the other hand, if you note when you?re creative, your subconscious mind will start feeding you more creative ideas.

Different surroundings can also encourage your creativity. Want more creativity in your love life? Hike up a mountain with your partner. Do you write? Try sitting on a roof to write. Want new ideas for your business? Take a notebook to the park and sit by the duck pond. A change of environment can get your thinking out of it?s ruts.

You can play games that exercise your creative imagination. One such game uses a technique called ?concept combination.? Alone or with other players, you combine random concepts or things in new ways, to see who has the best idea. A thermometer and a billboard, for example, could generate an idea for a sign that checks the weather and adjusts the message accordingly (?Come in out of the heat for a cold beverage,? or ?Come in out of the rain and warm up with our gourmet coffee.?).

Don?t Wait For Creative Imagination

Creative inspiration certainly can strike at any time, but it strikes more often when there is work instead of waiting. So if you want to come up with creative inventions, start mentally redesigning everything you see. Imagine a better bicycle, a faster mail service, or a better chair. Continue this for three weeks, and it will become a habit.

Of course, creative imagination goes beyond solving specific problems or inventing things. Truly creative minds are always coming up with the questions too, not just the solutions. If you want to be more creative all the time, focus on three things:

1. Changing your perspective. A child might think that working just to not work (to retire) is silly. Thinking from that perspective might give you ideas for how to make money doing things you enjoy. Seeing the world as a bear sees it might give a painter imaginative new ideas. Looking at things from a customer?s perspective is a sure way to find creative improvements for a business. See everything from several perspectives.

2. Challenging your assumptions. What if restaurants didn?t have employees? Visitors pay a machine as they enter, feed themselves at a buffet, and everything is as automated as possible, so one owner-operator could run a large restaurant alone. Challenge all your assumptions for practice. Do you really have to pay rent? Do swimming pools need water? Can exercise be a bad thing?

3. Let your ideas run wild. Does a flying bed seem silly? It could lead to the concept of a helium mattress. When you get off it in the morning, it floats out of the way, up to the ceiling. Perfect for small apartments. Don?t stifle your creativity. Relax, and let ideas come. You can always discard them later.

For these techniques to be a habitual part of your thinking, use them regularly. Since it takes several weeks to develop a habit, remind yourself to use them each day. Jot a few of your favorite techniques on a card and carry it with you. Look it over throughout the day and apply the techniques to anything. Soon, you?ll have a more creative imagination.

Harry's Afghan downtime: movies, candy trades

LONDON (AP) ? Prince Harry's off-duty time in Afghanistan appeared to be full of war movies, board games and elaborate candy trades.

The 28-year-old helicopter pilot and fellow members of his squad swapped Kit Kats and Rice Krispies Squares for American soldiers' M&Ms, according to a British media pool report released Sunday.

Harry himself outlined one of his less-prestigious duties. The third-in-line to the U.K. throne said anyone who lost at Uckers ? a military game similar to Ludo or Parcheesi ? had to then wait on his comrades like a Buckingham Palace butler, ready with a fresh cup of tea whenever anyone rang their bell.

"Whoever loses ... then you have to make brews for everybody all day," Harry told journalists ahead of his return to Britain this past week.

He also denied rumors that he was far better at PlayStation than at traditional board games.

"I don't know who told you that," he told reporters. "I lost two days ago, and yesterday, so since you guys have been here I've only lost."

Harry returned to Britain on Wednesday after a 20-week deployment in Afghanistan in which he acknowledged that he had targeted Taliban fighters from the cockpit of his Apache attack helicopter.

Asked in an earlier round of interviews whether he had killed anyone, Harry said: "Yeah, so, lots of people have." That admission disturbed some Britons and led to front-page headlines like the one in The Daily Mail that read: "Harry: I Have Killed."

This latest round of interviews, focusing on Harry's daily life at Britain's Camp Bastion military base in Afghanistan, is not likely to draw the same kind of headlines.

The report mainly carried glimpses of the prince's daily routine, including his favorite foods ? chicken and broccoli ? and his favorite movies ? "Full Metal Jacket," ''Apocalypse Now," and "Platoon."

In an interesting twist for an Apache pilot, "Black Hawk Down," the Ridley Scott film about a helicopter raid gone wrong in Somalia, was among the movies spotted in Harry's communal tent.

In Asia's trend-setting cities, iPhone fatigue sets in

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Apple Inc's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter http://gs.statcounter.com, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore - iPad and iPhone - declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion http://www.bubblemotion.com, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory http://www.jamfactoryonline.com developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast - consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK http://www.gfkrt.com.

IN WITH THE YOUNG CROWD

Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC Corp smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim, recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin http://www.billpin.com, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting - Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users - 20-something college students and fresh graduates - said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group http://www.gravitas.com.hk, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits - watching video, writing Chinese characters - while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5 but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget but now more and more people use it."

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

Frozen Greek Yogurt Is a Healthy Dessert Choice

Even though you have made the decision to adapt a healthier diet, that doesn?t mean that you have to give up on sweets and desserts. There are some healthy alternatives that you can eat. Frozen Greek yogurt is a healthy and tasty alternative treat that you can enjoy any time of the day or night. You don?t have to worry about any high sugar content or whether or not it will disrupt your digestive system if you happen to have a lactose intolerance. It comes in a wide variety of flavors and it is very inexpensive as well.

Frozen Geek yogurt has become so popular that it can be found in many local grocery stores and ice cream shops. If you have never tried it before, then you truly don?t know what a treat you have missed out on. It has a creamier consistency than regular ice cream. Instead of the main ingredient being milk it is yogurt, which is very beneficial since it has lots of probiotics in it. Probiotics are tiny organisms that play a large role in regulating a healthy environment and balance inside of your intestines. There is also significantly less fat content and calories, which lessens your chances of gaining extra pounds.

Since there are many different brands for you to choose from, you should be aware that all are not created equally. Some brands have extra fillers and other junk ingredients that increase the amount of calories and fats in them. Some flavors and brands have more sugars and calories than others. If you want to improve your chances of maintaining a healthy diet, make sure you check out the nutritional labels before you make any purchases. Don?t be afraid to experiment with different flavors. If you are not too keen on any other artificial flavors, you can always go with the plain flavor of frozen Greek yogurt and add fresh fruit toppings and nuts to it.

If you happen to have a little free time on your hands and want to do something creative, you could try making your own frozen Greek yogurt. It is a very simple process and requires an ice cream maker that you can find them at most kitchen supply and department stores. You can find many great recipes online. When you make your own frozen desserts, you can experiment with different ingredients and come up with your own favorite recipes.

Go to an ice cream parlor or to your local grocery store and purchase some frozen Greek yogurt. See how much you enjoy its flavor and texture. Experience how different it is from actual ice cream and experience how much healthier it is as well. You don?t have to worry about crashing your diet since it is among the healthiest desserts on the market.

Choosing frozen Greek yogurt as a replacement for ice cream can help you stay on track during your diet. Find out more about this low fat snack at http://ciaobellagelato.com.

Tamoxifen ameliorates symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, study suggests

Jan. 15, 2013 ? A new study has found that tamoxifen, a well-known breast cancer drug, can counteract some pathological features in a mouse model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). At present, no treatment is known to produce long-term improvement of the symptoms in boys with DMD, a debilitating muscular disorder that is characterized by progressive muscle wasting, respiratory and cardiac impairments, paralysis, and premature death.

This study will be published in the February 2013 issue of The American Journal of Pathology.

Using the mdx5Cv mouse model of DMD, investigators found that tamoxifen, given orally for more than a year, "caused remarkable improvements of muscle force and of diaphragm and cardiac structure," according to lead author Olivier M. Dorchies, PhD, of the Department of Pharmacology, Geneva-Lausanne School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Geneva and University of Lausanne. For instance, in the heart, fibrosis was diminished by approximately 50%. In the diaphragm, the muscle of the dystrophic mouse thought to be most like that of human DMD, tamoxifen reduced fibrosis while increasing thickness as well as the number and average diameter of muscle fibers. The net effect was that tamoxifen raised the amount of contractile tissue available for respiration by 72%.

Patients with DMD show muscle degeneration, and their muscle fibers become abnormally susceptible to stress. In this animal study, tamoxifen improved the structure of leg muscles, slowed muscle contraction, increased overall muscle function, and made leg muscles more resistant to repetitive stimulation and fatigue. In fact, tamoxifen rendered dystrophic muscles even stronger than those of non-dystrophic control mice. "Our findings of a slower rate of contraction and an enhanced resistance to fatigue in muscles from tamoxifen-treated dystrophic mice are of significance for the pathophysiology of muscular dystrophy," say the authors.

A wire test revealed that treating male mdx5Cv mice with tamoxifen for more than a year increased the whole body strength 2- to 3-fold, close to that of normal mice.

Additional findings shed light on the mechanism of tamoxifen's therapeutic actions. For example, plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity was found to be about 3 times higher in the dystrophic male mice than in the non-dystrophic males, and tamoxifen treatment normalized the CK levels of the dystrophic mice. The authors suggest that this effect is mediated by an estrogen receptor (ER) dependent mechanism. The study also reported for the first time that mouse dystrophic muscle is high in both ER ? and ?, and that tamoxifen raises levels of ER?2 in particular. Other findings, such as increased levels of calcineurin and accumulation of several structural proteins, indicate a protective effect of tamoxifen on dystrophic muscles. The authors point out that the beneficial effects of tamoxifen were seen with muscle tissue levels much lower than those reported in previous studies of normal rodents, suggesting that doses lower than those used to treat breast cancer may be effective in the treatment of DMD.

Notre Dame football notebook: Te'o's draft stock holds steady

His pride and body ached in the days that followed Notre Dame?s 42-14 meltdown in the BCS National Championship Game. But Notre Dame All-America middle linebacker Manti Te?o?s NFL draft stock didn?t take a similar hit.

Most draft analysts only dropped him subtly in their post-Alabama game projections, if at all. ESPN?s Mel Kiper Jr. has Te?o as the No. 6 overall prospect on his big board after peaking at No. 2.

?He has a really high floor, and evaluators know it,? Kiper wrote.

Scouts Inc. has him as the No. 7 prospect in the draft. Wright of draftcountdown.com has him No. 2, though projects him lower in his mock draft because of positional value. Middle linebackers are not as valued as, say, outside linebackers at the NFL level.

?You see people on Twitter and other places overreacting,? Wright said, ?but the NFL people aren?t going to overreact to one game. Now, it wasn?t a great performance for him. It raises maybe some concerns, but the whole defense did not play well. And Manti was coming off the banquet circuit, traveling all over to all these award shows. So I don?t think it?s going to affect him that much.

?I?ve heard some people say he?s going to drop out of the first round. It?s absurd. He?s still going to be the first player chosen at his position. I think he?ll go in that 10-15 range when all is said and done.?

Te?o has signed with agent Tom Condon and will work out in Bradenton, Fla., at the IMG Academy for the NFL Scouting Combine in late February. ND?s Tyler Eifert, another Condon client, is also working out in Bradenton at IMG, as are a number of projected high-round draft picks.

Two ND players that the Alabama game did hurt from an NFL Draft standpoint are safety Zeke Motta, because of his play, and defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore, because of the ACL tear in his right knee.

Lewis-Moore was projected as a late-round pick but will likely become a priority free agent, because he?ll miss all of the pre-draft workouts and may not be 100 percent before the middle of summer.

?It?s a shame to see a guy get hurt like that in the last game of his career,? Wright said. ?But it could work out for him. I?d rather be a priority free agent than a seventh-round pick, because I can pick my situation. I can look at the depth charts and say, ?Well, there?s more of an opportunity here,? than be a team?s last pick and you go in there and you?re training camp fodder and you?re basically facing uphill battles.?

Motta, projected as high as a third-round pick a few weeks ago, had a career-high 16 tackles in the loss to the Crimson Tide, but the numbers are deceiving in this case.

?He had lot of missed tackles, bad angles,? Wright said. ?And I think he was exposed in coverage a little bit, so I think Zeke Motta hurt himself a little bit.?

A third chance for Crist?

Those close to Dayne Crist say the circumstances that dropped the former Notre Dame quarterback from No. 1 to 2 on the depth chart at Kansas this past season are more mental than physical, which is why there?s still a realistic chance he could end up in an NFL training camp this summer.

?He has some tools to work with,? Wright said. ?He?s a great kid. He?s got the size. He?s got the arm. He?s a pretty good athlete. I could very well see him as a guy that teams want to bring in as maybe a No. 3 quarterback, but more than likely a practice-squad type. Then you work with him for a year and see what you have, so I think Dayne Crist will be in camp, but won?t get drafted.?

Crist played in one college all-star game Friday night in Tucson, Ariz., and will play in a second one Saturday in Los Angeles.

He threw for 62 yards and a TD on 6-of-12 passing for the winning West team in the Casino Del Sol All-Star game. On Saturday, he?ll suit up for the West team in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.

After suffering a season-ending knee injury in 2009 as a Notre Dame reserve, Crist started the first nine games of the 2010 season before suffering another season-ending knee injury.

He won the starting job in fall camp of 2011, but promptly lost the job to Tommy Rees at halftime of the season opener with South Florida. Crist transferred to Kansas at the end of the 2011 season. He was 103-of-216 for 1,313 yards and four TDs with nine interceptions in 10 games for the Jayhawks (1-11), seven of them as a starter.

Twitter.org Being Used For Scams, Twitter Seeks To Gain Control Of Rogue Domain

Too bad Twitter didn?t originally register ?Twitter.org? as well. It would have saved the company from the headache of trying to gain control of the domain, which is now being used to conduct scam surveys of people who unwittingly arrive thinking they?re at Twitter.com.

The Twitter.org site is set up to intentionally create confusion and make it appear that the actual Twitter is conducting a survey and giving away prizes. The look and feel of the landing page replicates Twitter?s earlier design and branding. Fusible.com first reported this story.

Twitter has filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization to wrest control of Twitter.org. As a condition of registering any domain owners must submit to the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (URDP), which allows for binding arbitration.

Here?s what people see if they type Twitter.org into the browser URL bar:

The domain redirects to a number of different URLs, such as http://quizzerist.net and http://chosurvey.net, which are privately registered. Users who realize they?ve made a mistake and try to leave are redirected to zbiddy, a penny auction site which is also alleged to be a scam or fraudulent site.

Clicking on any of the prize or incentive links in the survey solicitation leads to pages like this:

Trademark owners can file a complaint with WIPO under the URDP and ?defendants? must submit to the proceedings and respond or risk default. Here?s how the procedure works:

In the event that a trademark holder considers that a domain name registration infringes on its trademark, it may initiate a proceeding under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). Under the standard dispute clause of the Terms and Conditions for the registration of a gTLD domain name, the registrant must submit to such proceedings.

The UDRP permits complainants to file a case with a resolution service provider, specifying, mainly, the domain name in question, the respondent or holder of the domain name, the registrar with whom the domain name was registered and the grounds for the complaint. Such grounds include, as their central criteria, the way in which the domain name is identical or similar to a trademark to which the complainant has rights; why the respondent should be considered as having no rights or legitimate interests in respect of the domain name that is the subject of the complaint; and why the domain name should be considered as having been registered and used in bad faith.

The respondent is offered the opportunity to defend itself against the allegations. The provider (eg: the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center) appoints a panelist who decides whether or not the domain(s) should be transferred.

There?s almost zero chance that Twitter won?t succeed in taking control of Twitter.org. It?s quite possible the domain registrant of Twitter.org won?t even respond given that there may be consumer fraud involved and to come forward might mean to risk investigation and potential criminal prosecution.

Accordingly it?s only a matter of time before Twitter gains control of the rogue domain.
