fMRIs show that dyslexia isn't a matter of IQ

Thursday, September 29, 2011

About 5 to 10 percent of American children are diagnosed as dyslexic. Historically, the label has been assigned to kids who are bright, even verbally articulate, but who struggle with reading?in short, whose high IQs mismatch their low reading scores. When children are not as bright, however, their reading troubles have been chalked up to their general intellectual limitations.

Now a new brain-imaging study challenges this understanding of dyslexia. "We found that children who are poor readers have the same brain difficulty in processing the sounds of language whether they have a high or low IQ," says Massachusetts Institute of Technology neuroscientist John D. E. Gabrieli, who worked on the study with Fumiko Hoeft, Hiroko Tanaka, Jessica M. Black, Leanne M. Stanley, Shelli R. Kesler, and Allan L. Reiss of the Stanford University School of Medicine; Charles Hulme at York University in the UK; and Susan Whitfield-Gabrieli, also at MIT. "Reading difficulty is independent of other cognitive abilities."

The findings, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science, could change the ways educators help all poor readers.

The study involved 131 children, about 7 to 17 years old. According to a simple reading test and an IQ measure, each child was assigned to one of three groups?typical readers with typical IQs; poor readers with typical IQs; and poor readers with low IQs. All were shown word pairs and asked whether they rhymed. Spellings didn't indicate sound similarities. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, the researchers observed the activity in six brain regions important in connecting print and sound.

The results: Poor readers in both IQ groups showed significantly less brain activity in the observed areas than typical readers. But there was no difference in the brains of the poor readers, regardless of their IQs. "These findings suggest the specific reading problem is the same whether or not you have strong cognitive abilities across the board," says Gabrieli.

The study could have an important impact on both the diagnosis and education of poor readers. The revised definition of dyslexia proposed for the upcoming Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V), psychiatry's diagnostic bible, "currently lacks neurobiological evidence for the removal of 'severe discrepancy' [between IQ and reading ability]," says Stanford's Fumiko Hoeft. "Our study will be the first to provide such evidence."

Meanwhile, educators commonly offer reading- and language-focused interventions to bright dyslexics, to bring their reading up to the level of their expected achievement. But they may consider such specific remediation futile for less-"smart" children. If teachers understand that the same thing is going on in the brains of all poor readers, they may see that all those children could benefit from the same interventions. Since it's hard to learn much if you can't read, that's good news for a lot of kids.

Peel a Head of Garlic in Less than 10 Seconds with Two Bowls [Video]

Peel a Head of Garlic in Less than 10 Seconds with Two Bowls Peeling garlic is kind of a messy endeavor, and it can take a few minutes to peel all that skin off. Cooking web site Saveur shows us how to peel an entire head in less than 10 seconds?using just a couple of bowls.

You probably do the old tried and true garlic crush with a jar or other hard object, but that only gets you so far. You still have to dig into the (smelly) garlic with your fingers and peel everything off yourself. Saveur has a better alternative: just throw the crushed head of garlic in a bowl, stick another bowl on top of it, and shake it up. After a few seconds, you should find that each clove has completely shed it's skin and is ready for cooking (or repelling mosquitoes). Just remember to drink a glass of milk to neutralize that garlic breath when you're finished.

The Elements of Successful Product Reviews | saltygirlcooks.com

Consumers of all kinds have used the internet for shopping and reading product reviews because they save time. Many IM marketers are lazy and write their reviews based on other reviews and just reading about the product, and that is not the best way to do it. Personally, if there is no reasonable way to obtain firsthand experience, then we simply do not review it and find something else to promote. That and much more becomes essential to creating reviews that are able to compel readers to click through to the sales page as you are about to learn. Regardless of whether you would like to target the Spin Rewriter niche with affiliate advertising, or any other niche, ensure you?re focused on writing top quality reviews.

While your overall opinion may be positive or negative, you cannot just make that statement because people will expect you to include why you feel that way. You will be making statements and assertions, and when you explain why people should be able to see your logic. The one thing you must not let happen is failing to do this because then your audience will lose trust in what you have to say. We always tend to believe that our best efforts occur when we have the perspective that our reviews are designed to help the reader.

Be careful about how you talk to your audience in your review, and of course that is part of the basics of copywriting. If you get that part wrong then there will be a basic miscommunication problem which will definitely hurt your conversions. Look at it as if you?re writing a letter to your friend so that you?re able to give your target audience first hand advice in friendly manner. The writing part may require some additional work if you are not a good writer, and in that case be doubly sure your review is excellent. So even if you?re reviewing a product related to Easy Profit Bot Review, you should see to it that you?re getting honest in each and every way.

Anytime you write something like a product review, be sure you write a concluding paragraph. When you leave the reader thinking and feeling good and optimistic about what was just read, then that will help your conversions. The conclusion answers many questions such as ? how the product really added to your bottom line? The conclusion can be very powerful if you plan it out and write it in the best manner possible. Since people are hopefully open to what your review is saying, you can push them to click through to your product promotion with a solidly constructed conclusion.

Besides the obvious benefits of writing a review to sell more of the product you?re promoting, you?ll also be able to build a strong relationship with your target audience if you continue to review products on a regular basis. The obvious benefit to building-up a loyal base of readers and achieving a good reputation is people will have more trust in your reviews. Once people begin buying based on your good recommendations, then that will add another element to your income stream. Every single tip that we discussed above about writing Easy Profit Bot Bonus product reviews works, you just should take action.

Perry ups ante with twist on Romney's '4 aces' (AP)

JEFFERSON, Iowa ? Call it a personal class war: Texas Gov. Rick Perry is trying to draw sharp class lines with his chief GOP presidential rival, the well-heeled former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"As the son of tenant farmers, I can promise you I wasn't born with four aces in my hand," Perry recently told about 200 central Iowa GOP activists. He grinned and then paused to allow chuckles to roll through the audience as the message became clear: Perry was a product of humble beginnings ? ordinary folk like them ? while Romney came from privilege.

The line was a riff on Romney's zinger during a debate in Tampa, Fla., when he suggested that Texas' job growth had more to do with the state's natural gas and oil supply than Perry's leadership.

When asked how much credit Perry deserves for the state's growing employment, Romney replied: "If you're dealt four aces, that doesn't necessarily make you a great poker player."

Perry's advisers apparently saw the crack as an opportunity to illustrate personality, background and, perhaps, character differences between Perry and Romney, the top two candidates in a GOP field that mostly agrees on major policy issues.

In Iowa and elsewhere, Perry has started linking himself to the middle class, if not to low-income Americans, and tying Romney to the nation's upper echelon. His larger strategy is to paint Romney as a pre-packaged politician out of step with everyday Americans, plant suggestions with Republicans feeling the pinch of tough economic times that Romney doesn't understand their plight, and undermine Romney's attempts to connect with middle-class voters.

Perry sees another opening with his I'm-like-you-and-he's-not argument: Tea party activists and other conservatives who dominate the GOP primary electorate are clamoring for an authentic candidate to challenge a Democratic incumbent they view as a detached elitist.

He's also using class to draw distinctions in part to counter criticism that he is not up to challenging Romney, who ran for the GOP nomination in 2008 and led in national polls for 2012 until the Texan entered the race last month.

Still, reflecting the sensitivity of the issue, Perry has stopped short of acknowledging publicly that he was drawing a direct comparison with Romney.

"This country that we live in is not a class society," Perry said when pressed recently by reporters in Iowa. "This country is based on hard work and vision and anyone who does that can achieve anything."

Not that his campaign was even making an effort at subtlety. In a sign of the sharp attacks to come, Perry aides sent out an email last week titled "Middle Class Mitt."

It noted that Romney has a net worth of more than $190 million and resurrected a Romney remark in which he seemed to suggest that he was part of "the great middle class ? the 80 to 90 percent of us in this country." It also highlighted Romney's comment to voters last June: "I'm also unemployed."

"Hundreds of millions in the bank. Beach and lake houses around the country. A successful career acquiring and dismantling companies and jobs," according to the Perry camp statement ? a script that read much like a possible future TV ad.

Perry's discussion of class differences comes as a debate rages in Washington between President Barack Obama, who is calling for higher taxes on the richest Americans, and the Republican-controlled House, which is accusing the president of "class warfare" as he seeks to rally support for legislation designed to boost the economy.

Within the GOP presidential primary, Perry's allies hope that he can sow mistrust of Romney, a multimillionaire former businessman born into a wealthy family, among conservatives who already are skeptical of the Northeastern Republican who has flip-flopped on a series of issues they hold dear.

The Perry strategy carries a risk: Discussions of class may invite increased scrutiny of Perry, who today lives comfortably thanks to Texas taxpayers.

Still, the differences between the two couldn't be clearer.

Perry, 61, was raised on a west Texas farm, attended Texas A&M University and worked on the family's farm after five years in the Air Force before entering politics in the 1980s. He has spent the last 27 years in elected office, including a decade as governor, and has a net worth of roughly $1.1 million.

But in small-town Iowa, Perry emphasized his up-by-the-bootstraps biography. He sketched a scene of his early life in west Texas, with its small churches and rural highways, familiar to many of the activists who attend the Iowa caucuses and the South Carolina primary, important early-voting contests next year.

"When I passed that county courthouse and that square, it was a good feeling to know I'm back in middle America where the values are really strong," he said during an appearance that showed him clearly at ease.

Conversely, Romney often is criticized as robotic and faces the challenge of personally connecting with voters. He is fighting the perception of an East Coast patrician, a caricature President George W. Bush successfully hung on his 2004 Democratic challenger John Kerry, a Massachusetts senator.

Romney, 64, was raised in an affluent Detroit neighborhood, the son of George Romney, a top automotive executive who became governor of Michigan. Romney attended Stanford, Brigham Young and Harvard universities and cut his own career in business, founding a successful investment capital firm.

He is well-known to GOP voters in early primary states given that he ran hard for the 2008 GOP nomination but lost.

Plain-talking Southern governors have done well in the Iowa caucuses. They include former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who came from a poor family, in 2008 and then-Gov. George W. Bush of Texas, who was legacy to a powerful East Coast family, in 2000.

"There is an authenticity factor," South Carolina Republican activist Randy Page of Columbia, S.C., said of Perry. "And I think people here react to that."

(AP) ? The Pentagon is extending a pilot program to help protect its prime defense contractors, an effort the Obama administration can use as a model to prevent hackers and hostile nations from breaching networks and stealing sensitive data.

The move comes as cybersecurity officials warn of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks against U.S. defense companies, including data related to critical Pentagon weapons systems and aircraft.

Officials at the Department of Homeland Security are reviewing the program, with an eye toward extending similar protections to power plants, the electric grid and other critical infrastructure.

Efforts to better harden the networks of defense contractors come as Pentagon analysts investigate a growing number of cases involving the mishandling or removal of classified data from military and corporate systems. Intrusions into defense networks are now close to 30 percent of the Pentagon's Cyber Crime Center's workload, according to senior defense officials. And they say it continues to increase.

The Pentagon's pilot program represents a key breakthrough in the Obama administration's push to make critical networks more secure by sharing intelligence with the private sector and helping companies better protect their systems. In many cases, particularly for defense contractors, the corporate systems carry data tied to sensitive U.S. government programs and weapons.

So far, the trial program involves at least 20 defense companies. It will be extended through mid-November amid ongoing discussions about how to expand it to more companies and subcontractors.

"The results this far are very promising," said William Lynn, the deputy secretary of defense who launched the program in May. "I do think it offers the potential opportunity to add a layer of protection to the most critical sectors of our infrastructure."

He said the program has been able to block hundreds of intrusions into the defense companies, including some that were very sophisticated.

Lynn, who will leave office in early October, said the Pentagon is reviewing the costs of extending the program and so far it does not seem to be prohibitive. He said the government should move as quickly as possible to expand the protections to other vital sectors.

A senior DHS official said no decisions have been made, but any effort to extend the program ? including to critical infrastructure ? faces a number of challenges.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the program review is ongoing, said it would be helpful if Congress would pass legislation that explicitly says DHS is responsible for helping private sector companies protect themselves against cyberattack. Also, the legislation should say that companies can be protected from certain privacy and other laws in order to share information with the government for cybersecurity purposes, the official said.

Senior U.S. leaders have been blunt about the escalating dangers of a cyberattack, and have struggled to improve the security of federal networks while also encouraging the public and corporate America to do the same.

"Cyber actually can bring us to our knees," said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, adding that at some point the Pentagon may need to develop some type of governing structure similar to how the U.S. and allies monitor and limit nuclear weapons.

Data compiled by the Defense Cyber Crime Center shows that the number of investigations handled by analysts there has more than tripled over the past 10 years. And a growing number of them involve defense contractors, including those participating in the pilot program.

Housed near Fort Meade, Md., the so-called DC3 employs about 100 digital examiners who sift through millions of bytes of data in the digital forensics lab. Stacks of hard drives line the shelves, and clear plastic evidence bags are filled with a vast expanse of computer technology ? from cell phones and tiny flash drives to iPads, Wii consoles and Nintendo games.

The analysts dissect intrusions, malware and other attacks that have breached or tried to burrow into the defense contractors' computer systems. And while those investigations are just a small fraction of the lab's work, the number has grown steadily over the past three years.

The caseload includes about 100 in the past year that involve the defense industrial base. Much of the center's work is for criminal cases for the military's investigative branches ? including the Army and Navy criminal investigative services and the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Cybersecurity expert James Lewis said there will be some tough hurdles in any effort to expand the pilot program to more military contractors or through DHS to other critical infrastructure companies. But he said it can be done.

The Pentagon has multimillion-dollar contracts with companies, making it easier to build on those relationships and, if needed, link cyber threat cooperation to future contracts, said Lewis, who is with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

DHS, however, doesn't have that type of contracting relationship with electric companies, power generation plants, financial firms or other critical corporations that run vital infrastructure. And the agency would probably need additional congressional authorities to set up a program similar to the Defense Department pilot.

Sixteen months after its debut iPad is a proven business gadget, thanks to thousands of great apps developed by some of the best software developers from all over the world. Once, you?ve understood, your Tablet can double up as one of the best electronic tools for single-handed use. You will be quick to reach out to the best business apps aimed at maximizing your productivity.

Here is the Top 10 we would recommend?with a quick glance at their best features-

Dropbox

Definitely topping our list is the Dropbox, a great Cloud-storage system for storing, sharing files online operated as a web-based file hosting service by DropBox, Inc. Its best features, in addition to being free are its ability to synchronize DropBox, create back-up files with minimal free storage space as well as unlimited paid storage space. Except for the tedious navigation, this is a must have app for your iPad.

ZigZag Board

If you are looking for a whiteboard that synchronizes best with the iPad with the Web, the ZigZag board is for you. This app makes the best tool for those long-drawn sales presentations, discussions or simple brain-storming. Also, it is smooth and frictionless on the board and ink stains are of course absent. Drawback-requires greater pen color options as well as better features for merging with other programs.

Nomadesk

Nomadesk is another great business app for storing data and sharing across platforms. Its greatest advantage is that it can be accessed from a host of devices. Though the app is free, it costs $15 for one file server for a month. But it is unbeatable to track stolen iPad and remote file shredding.

Documents To Go

By far, Documents To Go is the best iPad app for editing, creating Excel and PowerPoint documents while on the go. Several price packages are available depending on the version of Office suite you opt. The Premium range is $16.99. It is excellent for moving docs from DropBox to SugarSync to other accounts online. Drawback of this App is poor synchronizing with Google.

Evernote

Here is an app, with great business application- the Evernote. It is made for getting your repository organized and could well replace your brainware. This app is available free of cost and is ideal for tagging files, bulletins in the form of board-styles and notebook presentations. It is the perfect software used for note-taking as well as for archiving purposes. The entire spectrum from a piece of text, an entire webpage, to a voice memo, as well as a handwritten note is considered as a note and is supported fully by this App.

Since, these notes in all formats can be synchronized online and are well supported by backup services, it is ideal for businesses, which are largely into consulting services lot of interaction occurs between clients and the business. Impromptu discussions, ideas are easy to note and storing for further usage makes it a perfect productivity business app.

From sketches to keep notes and making those impromptu points or emphasizing a point in a presentation, this is a great app for business for immediate sharing of thoughts and ideas etched on your digital paper. As a bold gel ink and one of the best writing technologies are deployed this makes for a fun but very purposeful app, which will give form to your ideas.

Best feature is the handwriting recognition technology and adaption of multiple pen styles and available at $0.99, it is a must have for designing-based business and definitely architects. Drawback, perhaps is that, the wrist protection works against the left-handers.

MicroStrategy

Micro Strategy is a true business-based app, which provides Business Intelligence while on the go. That is to say, software will be available for software for iPads and mobile and is licensed for free use to more than 25 users. It includes great features, such as sounding alerts for meeting business metric milestones. The drawback perhaps is that it is a little oversized for small businesses and ideal for mid-sized businesses.

Where MicroStrategy delivers is because of the unique feature of allowing business reports, documents, dashboards as well as KPIs to be accessible to concerned clients as well as executives who need to use such business intelligence for optimized client-servicing. It allows full viewing featuring of all business data in multi-touch tables, to visualizations and documents. The latest versions include enhancements for managing memory better; improving scalability as well as improved performance.

Keynote

Keynote is an iWork app, which helps in creating presentations and is more useful than our usual PowerPoint. It costs $9.99 and includes iPad connectivity to the projector, making it easier for sign-ins for presentations. But, the only difficulty happening with this App for iPad is that, your off-line Keynote presentations cannot be synchronized. It is ideal for making business presentations as they can be made in a variety of ways on your iPad.

Numbers

The original spreadsheet from iWork is reworked as Numbers to become a powerful app for the iPad. At $ 9.99, it is great not only for the pricing but as better and more consistent performer in comparison with Excel. Greatest feature is the undo option, which is powerful for overcoming fudgy numbers. Creating spreadsheets with just a touch is the greatest feature of this app. Drawback is the poor integration with older Excel documents.

ServiceMax

A great app for businesses that need to provide their employees with electronic gadgets to record the services they provide. ServiceMax is a free app and seamlessly integrates data from Salesforce.com. Only drawback is that employees cannot be monitored at every stage. Check out these Top business apps for iPad, which is aimed at improving your business productivity, even when you are on the move or your businesses are located across multiple-locations.

Let me know if these apps help you to increase your business performance. Also I would be open to hear any of your suggestions related to iPad business apps.

Browne beats Broughton at UFC 135, but tires in the third

Browne beats Broughton at UFC 135, but tires in the third

Travis Browne wants to get some of the big names in the UFC heavyweight division, but the 30-year-old needs to take baby steps.? Browne got by Rob Broughton via unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three cards, but he was unable to close out the fight in strong fashion.

"People thought this was step down. I mean, that guy took some of my best shots," said Browne.

Browne (12-0, 3-1 UFC) set the bar high after a crazy Superman punch knockout Stefan Struve at UFC 130. Nothing that spectaclar was going to happen in this one. Broughton turned out to be a much tougher and sturdy heavyweight than Struve.

In the first two rounds, Browne's athleticism was impressive and he picked his shots selectively. His best weapon was an outside leg kick on Broughton's lead leg. The Brit was limping by the early part of the final round.

Browne was also effective with the single-leg takedown. He scored one in each round. He did some damage and even scored the mount on multiple occasion, but he was simply too tired after dealing with the altitude in Denver.

"I wasn't gassing, I was feeling how big that dude is. It wasn't the altitude, it's just the fight you know," said Browne.

The 6-7, 250-pound monster took a small step tonight, but it's clear he needs to work on conditioning and a more focused attack if he's going to find a home in top 10.

New genetic region responsible for testicle development found

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? New research presented at the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology meeting has found a genetic region that may control testicle development in the fetus.

Men have XY sex chromosomes, and the development of testes is thought to occur after upregulation of the testicular SOX9 gene pathway, in the presence of factor SRY on the Y chromosome. However, the mechanism by which this testicular SOX9 upregulation occurs has so far been unclear.

In this study, Dr Jacqueline Hewitt and colleagues from the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, Australia, used whole genome mircoarray, and subsequently fluorescence in-situ hybridisation and bioinformatic analyses, to examine the genomes of 30 children with disorders of sex development (DSD). Nine patients had 46,XX testicular DSD (meaning that although they had XX chromosomes, they had developed as males with testicles), while 21 patients had 46,XY gonadal dysgenesis (meaning that although they had XY chromosomes, they had developed as females, without testicles).

In two of the patients with 46,XX testicular DSD, the researchers found a small region, outside of the SOX9 gene, which was duplicated. Bioinformatic analysis of this duplicated region indicated that it contained an SRY/SOX binding motif, meaning the region may be a regulator of SOX9 gene activity and thus involved in testicle formation. The tandem arrangement (i.e. one after another) of the duplications implies they have either a dosage-related or structural effect on the SOX9 gene. The position of these duplications ties in with previous research in patients with a similar condition, familial 46,XX testicular DSD, which also showed that this chromosome region may be involved in testes development.

These findings address key issues in the complex gene regulation system that controls human sex development, in particular the mechanism by which the SOX9 gene is upregulated and testicles are formed in the embryo. This new gene regulatory region appears to be a missing link in the testis development system, and it is significant that duplications in this region can initiate the development of testicles in a person who has XX chromosomes. Further studies are now needed to ascertain if testis development can be initiated by switching on this region in growing cells and in developmental animal models.

Researcher Dr Jacqueline Hewitt, from the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, Australia, said:

"We have known for a while that for testes to form in the embryo, a key gene called SOX9 needs to be activated. However, until now, the mechanism by which this activation occurs has been unclear.

"Our research indicates that there is a gene regulatory region on chromosome 17, upstream of the SOX9 gene, which is involved in the initiation of testicle development in the fetus. This regulatory region is sited a distance away from the SOX9 gene itself, but functions to switch the gene on, allowing the formation of testicles. This illustrates the fundamental importance of not just the actual genes, but also of gene regulation systems in human development. We are only now beginning to understand the mechanisms of gene regulation, which are essential for the development of a complex organism such as a human child. This research significantly advances our understanding of how the testes develop in the human body."

(AP) ? Vladimir Putin's decision to reclaim the presidency next year sets up the possibility that he could rule Russia until 2024 and foreshadows a continuation of the strongman rule that many in the West have called a retreat from democracy.

Although Putin departed the Kremlin in 2008 due to term limits and moved about two kilometers (1.5 miles) down the road to the prime minister's office, in a sense he never left at all. He cannily used Russia's state-controlled national TV channels to remain the country's pre-eminent political figure, with appearances portraying himself as a bold adventurer in Russia's wilderness, a vigorous advocate of the country's global importance and, occasionally, as a bit of a rogue consorting with scruffy motorcyclists.

His hand-picked successor as president, Dmitry Medvedev, appeared as little more than a tame youngster in comparison ? enthusing about Twitter and issuing earnest statements about the need for reforms, but achieving few tangible results.

"He didn't do anything important, and I'm pretty sure they didn't let him do anything," said Vyachelsav Mazurkov, who was spending a cool fall afternoon in a Moscow park soon after the congress of Russia's dominant political party approved Putin's candidacy. Although Medvedev had shown flashes of independence, particularly in denouncing the corruption that flourished during Putin's presidency, he was seen by many as simply a placeholder while Putin bided his time until he could legally return.

If he wins the March 4 election ? a near-certainty given his popularity and mastery of Russia's political system ? Putin will return to a presidency even more powerful than when he left. In 2012, the presidential term will be extended to six years from four; he would be eligible to serve two terms and just a few weeks shy of turning 59, the avid martial-arts fan's health appears robust.

In nominating Putin, his United Russia party also approved his proposal that Medvedev take over Putin's current role as prime minister, the No. 2 government position.

Putin's return to the presidency would be unlikely to ease Russia's dispute with the United States over the building of a European missile-defense system and other issues. Economic pressures, however, could push Putin to pursue reforms aimed at attracting more foreign investment, analysts said.

During his presidency, Putin ruled Russia with a steely command, bringing about a system known as "managed democracy" that saw opposition politicians all but eliminated from the national eye. His personal popularity aided his maneuvering. Many Russians view Putin as the strong, decisive figure needed by a sprawling country troubled by corruption, an Islamist insurgency and massive economic inequality.

The presidential election is preceded by national parliamentary elections on Dec. 4, in which United Russia will seek to retain its dominance; the party has 312 of the 450 seats in the current parliament. The period for formal submission of presidential candidates' names has not yet begun, and it is unclear who might choose to challenge Putin for president.

As president, Medvedev called for improvements in Russia's unreliable court system and for efforts against the country's endemic corruption. But his initiatives have produced little tangible result. Moving Medvedev to the premiership could set him up to take the brunt of criticism for austerity measures that Putin has warned will be necessary for Russia amid global economic turmoil.

Medvedev's advisers, likely to lose influence if he moves to the premiership, were clearly disappointed that he would not have another term in the Kremlin to try to continue pursuing reforms, and bristled at political maneuverings.

Medvedev's presidency held hopes for change, "but our political elite made a different decision and chose the path to so-called stability," Yevgeny Gontmakher of the Medvedev-established Institute for Contemporary Development think-tank said on Ekho Moskvy radio.

"This filthy deal of the country's supreme authorities is a blow to the institution of the presidency," Kremlin-connected analyst Gleb Pavlovsky told the radio station.

However, a spokesman for the powerful Russian Orthodox Church praised the move lavishly.

"This is a real example of goodness and morality in politics, an example that could be envied not only by our predecessors, people who lived in Soviet times, but citizens of the majority of countries in the world, including those who try to teach us," Father Vsevolod Chaplin was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

Putin's return to the presidency would likely continue or even strengthen the "managed democracy" system he installed in his first stint as president. Under it, opposition parties face high obstacles to winning seats in parliament; of the four parties currently in parliament only the Communists, whose support is dwindling, act as a genuine opposition force.

Opposition groups' attempts to hold rallies are rarely approved by authorities and unsanctioned gatherings are quickly broken up by police. All major television channels are under state control and rarely present opposition views.

Under Medvedev, Russia's relations with the West have been less tense, even though there has been little change in Russia's domestic politics. The improved relations with Washington largely reflected President Barack Obama's "reset" initiative. It is unclear if Obama will win a second term next year to continue the policy with Putin in the Kremlin.

Despite Medvedev's statements of reformist intent, Russia remained under strong Western criticism. A report by the U.S.-based NGO Freedom House last year said "there has been a steady erosion of the content, if not the formal institutions, of Russian democracy."

In a visit to Russia in March, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden exhorted Russians: "Don't compromise on the basic elements of democracy. You need not make that Faustian bargain."

The U.S. also wants to put elements of a missile-defense system in Europe, saying it is needed to counter the threat of attack from rogue nations such as Iran. But Russia has disputed the need, saying the defense missiles could instead be aimed at it, a stance that is unlikely to change with Putin back at the presidency.

Putin started a carefully orchestrated series of maneuvers at Saturday's session of the party congress in a Moscow sports arena by proposing that Medvedev head the party list for the December elections. Medvedev then proposed that Putin be the party's presidential candidate, and Putin returned to the stage to accept the proposal and express support for Medvedev as prime minister.

On his return to the stage, he found the microphone had been turned off temporarily, but said with a smile "I will speak louder. My commander's voice has not yet been lost."

The congress approved the moves with no apparent opposition. Despite growing discontent among ordinary Russians with the party, United Russia exerts such an overwhelming presence in the country's politics that Putin's election and Medvedev's switch to the premiership are virtually ensured.

Many connect Putin with Russia's turnaround from post-Soviet poverty to prosperity, largely driven by high prices for Russia's vast supplies of oil and natural gas. But growing awareness of the need to move beyond a natural-resources economy could force Putin in a new term as president to pursue reforms, some analysts say.

"I expect Putin will establish a very pro-business and pro-reform Cabinet," said Chris Weafer, chief strategist of the Russian investment bank Troika Dialog.

Putin also proposed Saturday that Russia's richest citizens face higher taxes. The flat income tax that came into effect during Putin's 2000-2008 presidency has been widely praised as improving tax collection and Putin's proposal would not change that, but he called for increases in consumption and real estate taxes that hit the rich comparatively harder.

A MotherHood Experience: SC Johnson Scrubbing Bubbles 1 Step ...

Nobody wants to talk or hear about toilet bowl cleaning. It's nasty, probably one of the worst jobs in the history of house cleaning especially with a house full of kids! We had the opportunity to try out a new way to clean the toilet with Scrubbing Bubbles One Step toilet bowl cleaner by SC Johnson.

Just step and spray, two times a day. The 360 degree sprayer cleans the bowl and under the rim, killing bacteria on contact. The powerful cleaning solution tackles toilet rings and limescale. Fresh Mountain Morning has a fresh and clean scent leaving the bathroom smelling fresh for family and guests. The refill lasts up to 30 days when used as directed and product is safe for the septic tank.

Scrubbing Bubbles 1 step toilet bowl cleaner can be purchased at most local retailers like Walmart or Zellers for around $10 or under. Package includes 1 device, 1 cleaning product refill - no batteries required.

This product isn't a bad idea entirely its useful for "in-between" cleanings or to freshen up the bathroom when guests are over, it helps ease the whole "bending over to scrub" part but that to me isn't that hard a job. The product does shine up the bowl pretty good for just coming out of a little sprayer however, if you have young children in the house who wander it wouldn't be suggested to have one of these in your home.

The foot pedal pump cannot be shut off or be locked and the sprayer does not stick to the side of the toilet bowl as well as it should, this poses a hazard for young children to be tempted to pull on the cord and find out what this new device in the bathroom is. This could be hazardous if the product is ingested. This did not happen to us but as a mom of two (one being only 3) I couldn't help notice the lack of safety features geared toward families with younger kids. Our kids did played with it behind my back and emptied the bottle within a couple of days however nobody was injured or ingested anything of the sort, I was simply using it as a precaution. I could lock my bathroom but that poses a big problem with a seven year old girl and a potty trainer ;-)

I would recommend this be used in a bathroom where young kids aren't allowed or in a household without children. After our review we decided this product is not suitable for our home because we have children under the age of 8 who are curious but we plan on gifting it perhaps to my mother or mother in law, I'm sure they could get good use out of it!

Fashion Flubs at Fla. GOP Debate (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | GOP hopefuls sounded off on the issues at Thursday's GOP debate in Orlando, Fla. Though the men had it easy in the wardrobe department -- it's hard to mess up the standard dark suit -- several of them committed sins against fashion with their choice of tie. Michele Bachmann, the lone female contender, stumbled with her choice of shoes. When looking presidential is part of the game, the candidates may regret the following sartorial slip-ups.

Michele Bachmann

Tsk, tsk, Mrs. Bachmann. Still with the Mary Janes? Shoes do make the woman, and we won't be taking you seriously until you invest in a pair of power pumps. Here's a tip: If stilettos aren't your thing, you can get away with kitten heels as long as the rest of the shape is suitably power-oriented.

Now, about your jacket. While red is the oft-recommended power color for women, we didn't care for strait-jacket structure and the high, closed collar. They make you seem stiff, rigid and closed, and that thick fabric could have repelled bullets. Next time, try something a little more open around the throat, with some tasteful jewelry as an accent.

While we're at it, please consult a primer on how powerful women stand. During the waves at the end, the men all had it right with their feet firmly planted, shoulder width apart. You, on the other hand, stood like a prissy schoolgirl with your feet welded together. The stance for a woman involves putting the left foot slightly forward with the toe pointing straight ahead. The right foot is some six inches back at a 45 degree angle.

Mitt Romney

Really, Mr. Romney, as the frontrunner, couldn't you have consulted a stylist about your tie? Yes, you get points for the impeccably tailored dark suit and the flag pin, but when a tie is your big-deal accessory you must get it right. Ties are tricky. Too much contrast and they draw attention away from your face. Romney's tie, with its bold blue stripes on a silver background, did precisely that.

Gary Johnson

Johnson's tie was clearly chosen to match his soulful baby blues. In fact, we wonder if some fashion-savvy female picked it out for him. Frankly the tie is almost perfect except for one thing. Though the narrow stripe avoided Romney's attention-stealing pitfall, it was a bit too narrow, creating a nausea-inducing moir? effect for the camera.

Ron Paul

While Mr. Paul's tie looked like silk rather than vintage polyester, its width gave us twitchy '70s flashbacks. The color was good, and the narrower double blue stripe on yellow almost saved it from the Romney contrast problem. Almost.

Herman Cain

Cain was one of three candidates opting for yellow as his dominant tie color. The other two were Jon Huntsman, who did it right, and Ron Paul, discussed above. We don't know if it was the too-light shade or the sheen on the fabric, but something about Cain's tie caused blinding glare for the camera. We might have listened better if we didn't have to avert our eyes every time he spoke.

Doing it right

So who did it right? Rick Perry, for one, with a crimson tie that was perfectly proper, if ever so slightly boring. Huntsman's yellow was warm and vibrant without stealing his thunder, and Santorum's blue-on-blue stripe was picture-perfect. Newt Gingrich was predictable in conservative crimson, and while we approve of the color fashion-wise, we wonder symbolically about candidates who choose red. We're guessing it's a nod to Old Glory, but red does come across as ever so slightly -- dare we say it? -- socialist.
