'Heart-wrenching': Cabin owner describes watching it burn

Candy Martin, the owner of the cabin allegedly used by Christopher Dorner to engage in a deadly shootout with law enforcement, spoke with NBC Los Angeles about the loss of her family's vacation home.

Martin was sitting down for an episode of "Walking Dead," when she saw the news coverage of the shootout near Big Bear, Calif. "And we?re looking and we say, 'Oh these are cabins, these look like...' and there?s no doubt that those are my cabins," Martin said.

Martin bought that cabin and several others in 2002. She used the main cabin that burned down as a vacation home for her extended family, when she wasn't renting it out. "It's hard for me to imagine him in there. And if I did do that, I imagined, 'What is he doing? What room is he in?'" Martin said.

Though she bought the cabin just over a decade ago, the home was 85 years old, dating back to the late 1920s. "That was heart-wrenching to see ... the fire. I just started crying. I couldn?t talk at that point."

During the shootout, which left one law enforcement official dead and another seriously wounded, the cabin caught fire. An investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire is ongoing. One person's remains, presumed to be Dorner's, were later found among the wreckage.

Though distressed and saddened about the loss of her home, Martin said she knows others are hurting more. "I'm not the [worst-off] victim," she said. "The worst are the families who lost their loved ones."

Digital literacy courses help Russian village people gain self-esteem ...

GOW12_Russia_42H_CaseStudy_1A few days ago, the 3-year project?Your Course: Improving Computer Literacy?was completed in the Volgograd region of Russia. After completing the digital literacy course,?Russian village people that first claimed ?to be zero in computer technologies? left with a grown self-esteem and a bigger respect among their neighbors and relatives.

Russia-TvoyKurs_01H

The project included not only Volgograd, a city with 2.5+ million inhabitants, but also small towns and remote villages. Villages of the Uryupinsk district actively participated in the project, and among the participants of the project were both young and older people, educated ones and less educated.

The major advertising in this area happens word-of-mouth. As around 28,000+ individuals live in the Uryupinsk district and?people tell their stories to relatives and neighbors, there are far more potential students than the approximately 100 students that have already completed the course in this area.

Retro Thursday: Realistic Pocketvision 3 Portable LCD Television ...

.

I love Retro Thursday. Having been a tech geek for most of my life AND having a tech geek for a father, we had some pretty bad-ass gear in the house growing up. Laserdiscs, Portable CD Players that weighed 20 pounds, yep the Millington house had the hook up. One gadget my dad brought home from Radio Shack was the Realistic Pocketvision 3. A 3? portable television which used natural light through a milky-white plastic panel to project a reversed television picture on to a mirror. Seriously.

Look:

What can I say: Revolutionary! Released in 1985, the picture was black and white, and despite the strange milky light square and the mirror, the picture was pretty awesome from multiple angles. You changed channels via a radio dial type wheel, and a small metal antenna helped with reception. If you are in the dark, don?t worry, Realistic sold a snap-on light to keep you watching. Because the television used natural light to illuminate the picture 4 AAA batteries got you ten hours of viewing. Pretty economic for a portable television in 1985.

My favorite moment with the Pocketvision 3 was the time young Eric brought it to school with him. I gotta tell you, it felt pretty great to watch a static-y 20 seconds of The Price is Right in science class. In an age before cell phones, in-class computers, or wi-fi, it was a rare glimpse to the outside world in school. Yeah, I was a bit of a bad boy.

In a time of iPhones, Time Warner apps, and constant connectivity, perhaps some of my gadget obsession is because of devices like this: Freedom, portability and Bob Barker.

Executive Speech Coach - Business Presentations: Who is the ...

When you look at your friends you probably can easily indentify those who are clearly extraverts and those who are clearly introverts. There might be a group about which you are not sure. The most likely reason might be that they are of one color but have learned to adapt their communication style to the other side when required.

I?m biased. I?m an introvert. That means that I see the world better from the perspective of introverts. However, I?ve learned how to express myself both in writing and in a presentation. People in my audience might not believe that I?m an introvert.

Ask an extravert ?Tell me about yourself? and he immediately starts talking. ?I was born in a log cabin?? When he?s done, he believes that he answered the question better than anyone else. Naturally, the extravert doesn?t ask, ?Did I answer your question??

Ask an introvert, ?Tell me about yourself? and she will likely ask you a few questions before and after she replies.

There are exceptions. Sometimes an introvert is so passionate about her topic that she transforms herself into an extravert for that conversation.

Extraverts seem to find it very difficult to transform themselves into an introvert.

Who makes a better presenter? Introverts or extraverts?

Extraverts can be attention grabbing and entertaining. Introverts can learn to do that and more importantly, introverts listen to the audience better.

What could be more important than that?

In my opinion as an introvert ? extraverts get out of the starting blocks quicker, but introverts can overtake them. Consider it the race between the tortoise and the hare.

Cocaine addiction study reveals targets for treatment

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Scientists at UC Santa Barbara are researching cocaine addiction, part of a widespread problem, which, along with other addictions, costs billions of dollars in damage to individuals, families, and society. Laboratory studies at UCSB have revealed that the diminished brain function and learning impairment that result from cocaine addiction can be treated -- and that learning can be restored.

Karen Szumlinski, a professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at UCSB, and her colleagues Osnat Ben-Shahar and Tod Kippin, have worked in the field of addiction for many years. Senior author of a paper on this topic published recently in The Journal of Neuroscience, Szumlinski is particularly interested in the part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex, where the process of "executive function" -- or decision-making -- is located. This area is involved in directing one's behavior in an appropriate manner, and in controlling behavior.

With her research team, Szumlinski discovered that a drug that stimulates a certain type of glutamate receptor -- when aimed at the prefrontal cortex -- could restore learning impairment in rats with simulated cocaine addiction.

"Needless to say, this (the prefrontal cortex) is one of the last parts of the brain to develop, and, of relevance to our students, continues to develop through about age 25 to 28," said Szumlinski.

Szumlinski explained that in the prefrontal cortex there seems to be "hypo-frontality," or reduced functioning, in drug addicts, as well as in patients with a range of neuropsychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia, depression, and attention deficit disorder.

Szumlinski calls the prefrontal cortex a late-developing brain area that is critical for making proper decisions, and inhibiting behavior. "You damage this brain region and you lose the ability to self-regulate, you make impulsive decisions like engaging in risky sexual behavior or drug-taking, you basically go off the deep end in terms of function," she said. "So we were very much interested in how drugs of abuse impact the prefrontal cortex, given that human drug addicts show deficits in this brain area when you put them into a scanner. They show hypo-activity." She said this hypo-activity, or hypo-frontality, might relate to a neurotransmitter that scientists know is involved in exciting the brain.

A key question, according to Szumlinski, is this: "Was that hypo-frontality there in the first place, and that's why they became an addict; or did the drugs change their prefrontal cortext, to cause it to become hypo-functioning and thus they're not able to control their drug use? You can't parse that out in humans. So that's why we turn then to animal models of the disorder, and we do have this rat model that we use in the paper."

Szumlinski pointed out a key difficulty in the development of treatments for addiction: There is little money targeted to the study of this disease. Hence, in addition to studying the brain mechanisms that are involved, she is joining forces with researchers who study other neurological diseases that are well-funded, to help find cures. She hopes that government approval of new drugs for these other diseases would eventually make the drugs available for clinical trials to study their effects on cocaine addiction.

Szumlinski cited statistics, calculated by scientists M.K. Bird and A.J. Lawrence of Australia, indicating that addiction can cost up to 3.5 percent of gross domestic product in Western countries, equaling $485 billion in the U.S. in 2007. In that year, addiction research received less than 2 percent of public and private funding of all cancer research.

Co-authors of the paper are Osnat Ben-Shahar, Tod E. Kippin, Arianne D. Sacramento, Bailey W. Miller, Sierra M. Webb, Melissa G. Wroten, Hannah E. Silva, Amanda L. Caruana, Evan J. Gordon, Kyle L. Ploense, and Jennifer Ditzhazy, all from UCSB's Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, and the Neuroscience Research Institute.

The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and by grants from the Academic Senate at UCSB.

Sprint Galaxy S3 receiving large OTA update

Android Central

It looks like many users with the Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3) on Sprint are receiving a relatively large -- about 157MB -- OTA update on their devices. At this point we're not too sure what this update has in store for Galaxy S3 owners, but with the large file size we're going to assume it has something notable in it. Grant, who sent us the above screenshot, notes that this is a Samsung software update and not a regular firmware update, which is quite interesting.

Sprint users have yet to see the update that would bring Samsung's premium suite to the device, and will likely have to wait a bit longer as this doesn't seem to be the one to bring it. Has your device pulled down the update yet? Let us know here and in the forums what changes you're seeing after the install.

More: Sprint Galaxy S3 Forums; Thanks, Grant!

PFT: Cowboys remain focused on Romo extension

Steve SpurrierAP

There are many people who think South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is taking a huge risk by playing his junior season, since he?s ineligible to enter the NFL draft.

As you might imagine, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, whose mortgage payment rides on the backs of unpaid interns such as Clowney, disagrees.

Clowney himself scoffed at the notion, tweeting ?I?m playing lol,? but Spurrier told Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal Constitution he thought the suggestion was off-base.

?Well, I hope he plays this year, and I certainly believe he should play,? Spurrier said. ?Now if money was his only goal in life, then he couldn?t play. And he might not get into a car before next year?s draft, so he wouldn?t be in a car wreck and get injured. He would be just very, very careful for a year not to have any kind of injury.

?But Jadeveon likes football. Football players play football. They don?t wait around on this, that or the other. He?s really good about avoiding injuries and so forth. He knows how to get out of harm?s way if there?s a big pileup around a tackle. I think the odds of him getting hurt as not nearly as much as a running back or somebody like that.

?I think he wants to play. I certainly hope and believe he does. I think he should play for South Carolina this season.?

Spurrier said the reaction in the media was understandable, given that it?s the offseason (what are we supposed to talk about, basketball?). But he also disputed the idea that Clowney?s financial security (which he?d enjoy by being a top-five pick, if not higher) was the most important element.

?Most of the guys that say he should sit out, they don?t realize the benefits of being on a college football team, and continuing with your teammates to have as big of a year as you possibly can,? Spurrier said. ?The money is going to be there down the road, so why would a person give up the thrill of playing college football?

?Those people have never played football, so they say he should sit out and get the money. That?s the only side of sports they see ? the money. There?s a lot more to it than just the money.?

All that?s easy for Spurrier to say, because he keeps getting paid even when Marcus Lattimore?s knee gets turned into spaghetti.

And while there are good and noble intentions for wanting a young man to stay in school, the financial reality is that Clowney is gambling millions on the proposition that his luck is good enough to avoid injury.

Data Recovery: What Exactly Can You Recover?

I recently joined a beginner?s course in computer and technology, which I very much enjoy. The topic of our last
class was data recovery. The professor talked to us about how we can recover deleted or lost files, how to recover
the recycle bin, how to recover files after data reformat, and how to recover deleted partitions. The course also
focused on repairing corrupted files, restoring Outlook files, and recovering lost data on a Mac Computer (memory card recovery software). All in all,
it was a class where I learned a ton of useful tips and tricks that I am sure will help me in the future.

Maker's Mark cutting alcohol volume in its bourbon

(AP) ? The producer of Maker's Mark bourbon is cutting ? likely permanently ? the amount of alcohol in each bottle to stretch every drop of the famous Kentucky whiskey. The alcohol volume is being lowered from its historic level of 45 percent to 42 percent ? or 90 proof to 84 proof.

The brand known for its square bottles sealed in red wax has struggled to keep up with demand that more than doubled the past seven years. Distribution has been squeezed and the popular premium brand has had to curtail shipments to some overseas markets.

"Over the last 100-plus days, there are many, many instances across lot of different cities where bars, restaurants, package stores have run low, run out," Rob Samuels, chief operating officer for Maker's Mark and grandson of the brand's founder, said Monday.

"Given the surge in demand outstripping supply, what we've decided to do very carefully is to slightly reduce the alcohol volume."

The recipe and production process will stay the same, except "a touch more water" will be added when the whiskey comes out of the barrel for bottling, Samuels said. The brand's bourbon is made at its distillery near the small town of Loretto, 45 miles south of Louisville.

Water is typically added before whiskey goes into the barrel for aging and after bourbon comes out for bottling, he said.

It's the first time the bourbon brand, more than a half-century old, has altered its proof or alcohol volume.

The lower alcohol volume is seen as permanent and will increase available volume by about 6 percent, Samuels said.

The change was done only after extensive testing showed it didn't alter the taste of Maker's Mark, he said.

"Paramount in our decision was ensuring the taste standard is exactly the same," Samuels said.

His father, Bill Samuels Jr., chairman emeritus of the brand started by his parents, said he thought his father would approve.

"He never really was wed to 90 proof anyway," the elder Samuels said. "It's just that he had to pick something, and he knew that anything over 90, the alcohol smothered the taste of whiskey and he was a little nervous about going too much lower."

Chuck Cowdery, an American whiskey writer and author of "Bourbon, Straight," said "time will tell" how the change sits with the brand's legions of devoted fans in an industry that clings tightly to tradition.

"They're banking that this won't be a deal-breaker with their consumers, that there will be a hew and cry for a few days, but sales won't miss a beat," he said in an email. "Are they right? Maker's is in many ways unique, so it's hard to say."

Maker's Mark is owned by spirits company Beam Inc., based in Deerfield, Ill. Its other brands include Jim Beam bourbon.

The supply shortage at Maker's Mark comes amid an ongoing expansion of its operations that has cost tens of millions of dollars.

A distillery expansion completed last year boosted production capacity by 45 percent, Rob Samuels said. Maker's last year added warehouse space for 100,000 more barrels of aging bourbon, and it expects that expansion pace to continue for at least another five years.

Maker's bourbon ages in barrels for at least six summers and no longer than seven years before bottling.

One shortcut the bourbon maker refuses to accept, Rob Samuels said, is trimming the aging process, which would increase market supplies. It also won't buy surplus whiskey from other distilleries, he said.

The supply shortage at Maker's comes amid growing demand for Kentucky bourbons in general.

Combined Kentucky bourbon and Tennessee whiskey sales from producers or suppliers to wholesalers rose 5.2 percent to 16.9 million cases last year, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, a national trade association that released figures last week. Revenue shot up 7.3 percent to $2.2 billion, it said. Premium brands, generally made in smaller batches with heftier prices, led sales and revenue gains.

Kentucky produces 95 percent of the world's bourbon supply, according to the Kentucky Distillers' Association. There are 4.9 million bourbon barrels aging in Kentucky, which outnumbers the state's population.

In the last year, Kentucky distilleries invested nearly $230 million in new and expanded production facilities, warehouses, visitor's centers, bottling lines and more, according to Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky distillers' group. It's the largest expansion since Prohibition, he said.

The Caucus: For Science's Sake, It's 'Mohawk Guy'

To highlight science education and memorable haircuts, one of the guests in Michelle Obama?s box during the State of the Union speech Tuesday night will be the ?Mohawk Guy? ? Bobak Ferdowsi, a member of the team operating NASA?s Mars Curiosity rover who is best known for his spiky, red- and blue-streaked haircut and the stars shaved on the side of his head.

Last Thursday, Mr. Ferdowsi was driving when he got a phone call from John P. Holdren, the president?s science adviser. ?He said the first lady would like to invite you to the State of the Union address,? Mr. Ferdowsi said. ?It?s kind of a surprise.?

In Tuesday night?s speech, Mr. Obama is likely to touch on familiar themes touting the importance of science education and innovation for the United States economy. In its descriptions of the invited guests, the White House noted that Mr. Ferdowsi volunteers as a mentor at robotics competitions.

Still, it is the hair that gained the 33-year-old Mr. Ferdowsi his renown, not to mention marriage proposals and more than 50,000 followers on Twitter.

He has a history of getting special haircuts to commemorate milestones on the Mars project. ?The team knew I was going to do something special for landing night,? he said. ?And rather than let me decide on my own, my boss sent out an e-mail poll to the team, letting them vote on my hair.?

The decision: ?They wanted a red, white and blue kind of theme.?

When Mr. Obama phoned the NASA team in August to congratulate its members on the successful landing of the rover, he singled out Mr. Ferdowski, joking, ?I, in the past, thought about getting a Mohawk myself, but my team keeps on discouraging me.?

Mr. Ferdowski has had the Mohawk since then, although he has modified the accouterments a couple of times. For the rover?s first drive, he replaced the stars with dots and dashes that spelled out J.P.L., for Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Morse code. (The wheels of the rover have the same pattern, endlessly spelling out those letters as it rolls along Mars.)

Now he has a new pattern. ?For tonight, I have U.S.A. on one side and Mars on the other,? he said.

Apple?s Budget iPhone To Reportedly Retail For $300, Releasing In June?

Advertisements

Apple?s unannounced but much rumored ?mini? iPhone is something that has been the subject of much guess work and conjecture for quite a while now, and with the rumored June release date closing in the talk is only going to intensify. The latest round of claims and counterclaims comes courtesy of Topeka Capital analyst Brian White, and he reckons he knows what the phone will be called as well as how much we?ll have to pay in order to own one.

Smith?s guess ? and we?re not entirely sure he has based this on more than tea leaves or the shapes of clouds ? is that the new, cheaper iPhone will be dubbed the iPhone mini, or iPhone Air, presumably dependent on which side of the bed he happens to have gotten out of on that particular morning. Either could well be true, but then Apple may just call it the Not-quite-a-proper-iPhone for all we know. For the record, we don?t really think that.

Or do we?

The second revelation to drop courtesy of Mr. White is the news that he expects the handset to retail around the $300 price point, mainly because it would compete favorably in China. The mind-bending news that cheaper products open Apple up to less rich countries, too, apparently helped in White?s bold claims.

A $250-$300 price range would also be competitive with China-based Xiaomi that offers a high-end phone experience at a mid-range price of ~$320 in China,? he writes. ?We believe a $250-to-$300 price point will allow Apple to significantly expand its reach in the smartphone market and better address developing markets such as China, while opening up more opportunities in Brazil, Russia, India and elsewhere.

Round about here is where we tell you that, as always, we?re all very much in the dark about whether Apple will release a new model of iPhone at all, let alone what it will be called or what it may or may not retail for. Anyone claiming otherwise is simply guessing, and you don?t need to be an ?analyst? to do that. In fact, we can do it too.

iPhone 3GS

Tomorrow?s revelation ? Apple to release a new Mac that levitates, uses rain water instead of electricity and saves the planet. They?ll call it? the Mac Rainforest.

You heard it here first.

Calculated Risk: Las Vegas Real Estate: Sales and Inventory ...

by Bill McBride on 2/11/2013 04:13:00 PM

This is a key distressed market to follow since Las Vegas has seen the largest price decline of any of the Case-Shiller composite 20 cities.

The Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors (GLVAR) reported (Most data via Tom Lawler):

? Residential home sales by realtors in the Las Vegas metro area totaled 2,821 in January, down 21.4% from last January?s pace

? Bank-owned properties were 12.5% of last month?s sales, down from 45.5% last January, while last month?s short-sales share were 36.2%, up from 28.1% a year ago.

? All-cash transactions were 56.2% of last month?s sales, up from 52.5% last January.

? Total listings in January totaled 17,910, down 0.9% from December and down 23.1% from a year ago. However single family home listings without offers were down over 58% from a year ago. A large number of the homes listed for sales are "short sale pending".

? Short sales are about three times foreclosures now. We've seen a shift from foreclosures to short sales in most areas (not just in areas with new foreclosure laws).? Note: Some of the surge in short sales?last month?might have been due to sellers pushing to beat the expiration of the Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007, and there was a decline in January.? The Act? was extended?as part of the fiscal deal, so the number of short sales should remain high in 2013.

? The decline in overall sales is because of fewer foreclosure sales. As the market slowly recovers, the number of distressed sales should fall and the number of conventional sales should rise.?

Overall this is a slowly improving distressed market. Note: The median price was up 27.1% from a year ago, but I suggest using the repeat sales indexes?because the median is impacted by the mix.

Study: 1 in 4 consumers had error in credit report

WASHINGTON (AP) ? One in four consumers found an error in a credit report issued by a major agency, according to a government study released Monday.

The Federal Trade Commission study also said that 5 percent of the consumers identified errors in their reports that could lead to them paying more for mortgages, auto loans or other financial products.

The study looked at reports for 1,001 consumers issued by the three major agencies ? Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. The FTC hired researchers to help consumers identify potential errors.

The study closely matches the results of a yearlong investigation by The Columbus Dispatch. The Ohio newspaper's report last year said that thousands of consumers were denied loans because of errors on their credit reports.

The FTC says the findings underline the importance of consumers checking their credit reports.

Consumers are entitled to a free copy of their credit report each year from each of the three reporting agencies.

The FTC study also found that 20 percent of consumers had an error that was corrected by a reporting agency after the consumer disputed it. About 10 percent of consumers had their credit score changed after a reporting agency corrected errors in their reports.

The Consumer Data Industry Association, which represents the credit reporting agencies and other data companies, said the FTC study showed that the proportion of credit reports with errors that could increase the rates consumers would pay was small.

The study confirmed "that credit reports are highly accurate, and play a critical role in facilitating access to fair and affordable consumer credit," the association said in a statement.

In September, the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau gained the authority to write and enforce rules for the credit reporting industry and to monitor the compliance of the three agencies. Prior to that, the reporting agencies weren't subject to ongoing monitoring by federal examiners.

The CFPB hasn't yet taken any public action against the agencies. However, it is accepting complaints from consumers who discover incorrect information on their reports or have trouble getting mistakes corrected. The agencies have 15 days to respond to the complaints with a plan for fixing the problem; consumers can dispute that response.

By contrast, the FTC can only take action if there is an earlier indication of wrongdoing. It cannot demand information from or investigate companies that appear to be following the law.

Building Blocks

Every building has a story, says Abdul Senan, co-founder of an architecture and interior design firm called Immigrandesign. That story is what the UAE-born, Florence-based designer looks for when he first enters a house he is set to work on. First, Senan seeks out distinct characteristics; the position of the windows, lighting, the height and depth of the walls and ceilings. All of these elements tell a lot, as well as the collective experiences of the people and buildings surrounding it, he explains. ?When you go to Yemen you will see people living in houses that are centuries old. What I like is that people are living in a modern way but still retain their culture,? he adds.

?

Senan remembers his childhood in Abu Dhabi as a city bursting from the desert amidst a clamour of construction, directed by imported architects. But it is the warm memories of childhood trips to the home of his parents in Yemen that he remembers most fondly. ?Yemen is one of the world?s oldest civilisations in terms of architecture and being brought up in a modern city like Abu Dhabi my eyes were always drawn to the amazing colours and shapes of the structures there.?

?

Aged 13, Senan made a two day road trip through Yemen?s ancient district of Hadhramaut and from the bus window, he spied something like a mirage on the horizon. It was a city of skyscrapers lost in a parched rocky desert. ?I didn?t have any idea what it was so when I went back home I asked someone who was into history and what they told me fascinated me.? The city was Shibam, noted for its distinctive? ancient limestone block skyscrapers, that are one of the world?s oldest examples of multi-storey architecture. Some blaze 11 storeys into the sky and their urban planning is still an essential lesson for any history-inclined civil servant. ?I was drawn into this architectural style more and more,? explains Senan. ?When I went back to Abu Dhabi I always used to take note of the form and structure of buildings and skyscrapers.?

?

Brought up in a mercantile household, where most talk was of business and not art, meant that although not actively discouraged from taking an interest in architecture, his knowledge of the subject was almost completely self-taught. ?Art was missing in our house,? he says, ?but I seemed to have an eye for it.? That?s not to say that there wasn?t inspiration at home; his father?s company traded antique Orientalist furniture and when the house was full of guests, conversation usually turned to the subject of Arabic and Persian design. ?From decorating my own space and having a clear idea of the colours I wanted to have in my room, it drew me closer into interior design,? Senan says.

?

His conclusion is that interior design and architecture are an integral part of everyday life and impossible to ignore. ?It?s a way of presenting yourself to outsiders, even the colours we use in our rooms. Each country has a different way of using colour and design styles; you see this in France, in Italy, in England and in Scandinavia,? he elaborates. Although Senan talks about the distinct historical forms architecture have taken in parts of the Middle East, he still has his reservations about some elements of contemporary design in the UAE. ?In some parts, [originality in architecture] is missing.?

?

It is one reason that he has spent the past ten years away from his UAE home, in Europe. After completing a Bachelor?s in architectural engineering at Cardiff University ? the influence of which resonates in his slight South Welsh twang ? Senan decided to concentrate his efforts on interior design with a Master?s thesis at the epicentre of Europe?s Renaissance movement in the 15th century. ?I came to Florence thinking I would be the loser one on the course who knew nothing about interior design but the course was interesting because it had people from different backgrounds who were just interested in interior design. I actually had an advantage because of my background in architectural engineering, where a lot of its principles are based on considering interior work.?

?

Being the only Arab on his course was another trial for Senan, particularly in a country where interior designers are often only taken seriously if they are aged over 35 and Italian. These prejudices led Senan to form the aptly named architecture and interior design company Immigrandesign with his Kosovan business partner Arion Kabashi. It was a playful swipe at the pair?s immigrant status in the often conservative and rigid Italian interior design industry.

?

Senan, still only 27, had already spent a year as an intern with one of Florence?s leading interior design houses before he started the company and now he has the chance to put his theoretical knowhow into practice. His first independent commission was to design a beach house in Abu Dhabi and it was a sharp lesson in the realities of construction. ?It was a big and challenging project,? he says.

?

Later he was tasked with renovating a cottage in Scotland for people with special needs. ?The challenge there was that they wanted the home to look modern but at the same time Victorian and also specifically cater to the needs of the disabled people visiting and using the cottage. When it was completed, we presented it to a member of the British Royal Family and he really liked it. That was really encouraging and it made us proud. We then had the confidence to do our own thing,? he says.

?

The pair are currently working on one of their most ambitious projects, a lamp that is inspired by the structure of a diamond and that takes on the concept of a rainbow prism. ?We did it in a contemporary way, we put an LED inside the structure and we decided to keep it minimal so you can adjust reflection of the light,? says Senan. The first product is being built and it should be displayed publically for the first time in April at the world?s most competitive interior design exhibitions, Salone Del Mobile in Milan. If all goes well, Senan hopes to market the product in Europe and then elsewhere, including the Middle East. ?Every architect wants to have his own name and make a stand in the interior design world. It?s not easy because there are so many interior designers and only a few stand out,? he says.

?

He speaks of the high days of Islamic architecture as the region?s Golden Age and feels that more recent projects lack the verve and prominence of earlier Moorish and Ummayid styles. He even ponders on the idea of blending Yemeni architecture to fit contemporary needs.

?

?I would like to bring Arabic architecture more visibility so maybe this could happen by creating a studio starting in Europe and setting one up back home in the Middle East,? he explains. ?But first I still want to learn more, grasp and fully understand design.?

?

Determined to make a difference back home from all that he has learnt abroad, Senan concludes: ?It might take about ten years to create my own way in design but hopefully when we grow bigger I will go back to the Middle East.?

(AP) ? With a few words in Latin, Pope Benedict VXI did what no pope has done in more than half a millennium, stunning the world by announcing his resignation Monday and leaving the already troubled Catholic Church to replace the leader of its 1 billion followers by Easter.

Not even his closest associates had advance word of the news, a bombshell that he dropped during a routine morning meeting of Vatican cardinals. And with no clear favorites to succeed him, another surprise likely awaits when the cardinals elect Benedict's successor next month.

"Without doubt this is a historic moment," said Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, a protege and former theology student of Benedict's who is considered a papal contender. "Right now, 1.2 billion Catholics the world over are holding their breath."

The move allows for a fast-track conclave to elect a new pope, since the traditional nine days of mourning that would follow a pope's death doesn't have to be observed. It also gives the 85-year-old Benedict great sway over the choice of his successor. Though he will not himself vote, he has hand-picked the bulk of the College of Cardinals ? the princes of the church who will elect his successor ? to guarantee his conservative legacy and ensure an orthodox future for the church.

The resignation may mean that age will become less of a factor when electing a new pope, since candidates may no longer feel compelled to stay for life.

"For the century to come, I think that none of Benedict's successors will feel morally obliged to remain until their death," said Paris Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois.

Benedict said as recently as 2010 that a pontiff should resign if he got too old or infirm to do the job, but it was a tremendous surprise when he said in Latin that his "strength of mind and body" had diminished and that he couldn't carry on. He said he would resign effective 8 p.m. local time on Feb. 28.

"All the cardinals remained shocked and were looking at each other," said Monsignor Oscar Sanchez of Mexico, who was in the room at the time of the announcement.

As a top aide, Benedict watched from up close as Pope John Paul II suffered publicly from the Parkinson's disease that enfeebled him in the final years of his papacy. Clearly Benedict wanted to avoid the same fate as his advancing age took its toll, though the Vatican insisted the announcement was not prompted by any specific malady.

The Vatican said Benedict would live in a congregation for cloistered nuns inside the Vatican, although he will be free to go in and out. Much of this is unchartered territory. The Vatican's chief spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said he isn't even sure of Benedict's title ? perhaps "pope emeritus."

Since becoming pope in 2005, Benedict has charted a very conservative course for the church, trying to reawaken Christianity in Europe where it had fallen by the wayside and return the church to its traditional roots, which he felt had been betrayed by a botched interpretation of the modernizing reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

His efforts though, were overshadowed by a worldwide clerical sex abuse scandal, communication gaffes that outraged Jews and Muslims alike and, more recently, a scandal over leaked documents by his own butler. Many of his stated priorities as pope also fell short: He failed to establish relations with China, heal the schism and reunite with the Orthodox Church, or reconcile with a group of breakaway, traditionalist Catholics.

There are several papal contenders in the wings, but no obvious front-runner ? the same situation as when Benedict was elected after the death of John Paul. As in recent elections, some push is expected for the election of a Third World pope, with several names emerging from Asia, Africa and Latin America, home to about 40 percent of the world's Catholics.

The Vatican stressed that no specific medical condition prompted Benedict's decision, saying he remains fully lucid and took his decision independently.

"Any interference or intervention is alien to his style," Lombardi said.

The pope has clearly slowed down significantly in recent years, cutting back his foreign travel and limiting his audiences. He now goes to and from the altar in St. Peter's Basilica on a moving platform to spare him the long walk down the aisle. Occasionally he uses a cane.

As early as 2010, Benedict began to look worn out: He had lost weight and didn't seem fully engaged when visiting bishops briefed him on their dioceses. But as tired as he often seemed, he would also bounce back, enduring searing heat in Benin to caress a child and gamely hanging on when a freak storm forced him to cut short a speech during a youth festival in Madrid in 2011.

His 89-year-old brother, Georg Ratzinger, said doctors recently advised the pope not to take any more trans-Atlantic trips.

"His age is weighing on him," Ratzinger told the dpa news agency in Germany. "At this age, my brother wants more rest."

Benedict emphasized that to carry out the duties of being pope, "both strength of mind and body are necessary ? strengths which in the last few months, have deteriorated in me."

"After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths due to an advanced age are no longer suited" to the demands of being the pope, he told the cardinals.

In a way, it shouldn't have come as a surprise. Benedict himself raised the possibility of resigning if he were too old or sick to continue.

"If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office, then he has a right, and under some circumstances, also an obligation to resign," Benedict said in the 2010 book "Light of the World."

But he stressed that resignation was not an option to escape a particular burden, such as the sex abuse scandal.

"When the danger is great, one must not run away. For that reason, now is certainly not the time to resign. Precisely at a time like this one must stand fast and endure the situation," he said.

Although popes are allowed to resign, only a handful has done it ? and none for a very long time.

The last pope to resign was Pope Gregory XII, who stepped down in 1415 in a deal to end the Great Western Schism, a dispute among competing papal claimants. The most famous resignation was Pope Celestine V in 1294; Dante placed him in hell for it.

There are good reasons why others haven't followed suit, primarily because of the fear of a schism with two living popes. Lombardi sought to rule out such a scenario, saying church law makes clear that a resigning pope no longer has the right to govern the church.

When Benedict was elected in 2005 at age 78, he was the oldest pope chosen in nearly 300 years. At the time, he had already been planning to retire as the Vatican's chief orthodoxy watchdog to spend his final years writing in the "peace and quiet" of his native Bavaria.

On Monday, Benedict said he plans to serve the church for the remainder of his days "through a life dedicated to prayer." The Vatican said after he resigns he will travel to Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer retreat south of Rome, and then live in the monastery.

All cardinals under age 80 are allowed to vote in the conclave, the secret meeting held in the Sistine Chapel where cardinals cast ballots to elect a new pope. As per tradition, the ballots are burned after each voting round; black smoke that snakes out of the chimney means no pope has been chosen, while white smoke means a pope has been elected.

There are currently 118 cardinals under age 80 and thus eligible to vote, 67 of them appointed by Benedict. However, four will turn 80 before the end of March. Depending on the date of the conclave, they may or may not be allowed to vote.

Benedict in 2007 passed a decree requiring a two-thirds majority to elect a pope, changing the rules established by John Paul in which the voting could shift to a simple majority after about 12 days of inconclusive balloting. Benedict did so to prevent cardinals from merely holding out until the 12 days had passed to push through a candidate who had only a slim majority.

Contenders to be Benedict's successor include Cardinal Angelo Scola, archbishop of Milan; Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna, and Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Canadian head of the Vatican's office for bishops.

Longshots include Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York. Although Dolan is popular and backs the pope's conservative line, being from a world superpower would probably hurt his chances. That might also rule out Cardinal Raymond Burke, an arch-conservative and the Vatican's top judge, even though he is known and respected by most Vatican cardinals.

Monsignor Antonio Marto, the bishop of Fatima in central Portugal, said Benedict's resignation presents an opportunity to pick a church leader from a country outside Europe.

"In Africa or Latin America, there is a freshness, an enthusiasm about living the faith," Marto told reporters. "Perhaps we need a pope who can look beyond Europe and bring to the entire church a certain vitality that is seen on other continents."

Cardinal Antonio Tagle, the archbishop of Manila, has impressed many Vatican watchers, but at 56 he is considered too young.

Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson of Ghana is one of the highest-ranking African cardinals at the Vatican, currently heading the Vatican's office for justice and peace, but he's something of a wild card.

There are several "papabiles" in Latin America, though the most well-known ? Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras ? is considered far too liberal to be elected by such a conservative College of Cardinals.

Whoever it is, he will face a church in turmoil: The sex abuse scandal has driven thousands of people away from the church, particularly in Europe. Rival churches, particularly evangelical Pentecostal groups in the developing world, pose new competition. And as the pope himself has long lamented, many people in an increasingly secular world simply believe they don't need God.

The timing of Benedict's announcement was significant: Lent begins this week on Ash Wednesday, the most solemn period on the church's calendar that culminates with Holy Week and Easter on March 31. It is also the period in which the world witnessed the final days of John Paul's papacy in 2005.

The timing means that there will be a spotlight cast on Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the Italian head of the Vatican's culture office who has long been on the list of "papabile." Benedict selected him to preside over the Vatican's spiritual exercises during Lent.

And by Easter Sunday, the Catholic Church will almost certainly have a new leader, Lombardi said ? a potent symbol of rebirth in the church on a day that celebrates the resurrection of Christ.

Mass. boy dies of carbon monoxide in running car

(AP) ? An 11-year-old Massachusetts boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning Saturday after being overcome as he sat in a running car to keep warm, while his father was shoveling snow to get the car out of a snow bank.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the boy was helping his father shovel the snow in the Dorchester neighborhood but got cold, so his father started the car and the boy got inside the vehicle. MacDonald said the car exhaust was covered by a snow bank, causing the fumes to collect in the car.

"I don't know how long the boy was in the car, at some point the father was still working and was unaware of the boy's condition," said Boston firefighter Octavius Rowe, who lives nearby and went to help. "So very, very unfortunate."

When the boy was overcome by the fumes, the father went into respiratory arrest and emergency workers took both to Boston Medical Center, officials said. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. No names were released.

Rowe said he was at home when he noticed a commotion in the street. He went outside and saw the father leaning against a pile of snow, Rowe said.

"I came over to the car where it all started and the father appeared to have lost consciousness," Rowe said. "He was semi-conscious and laying on the snow bank, and I wanted to first get him off that cold surface."

Rowe said he put the man on a flat surface to revive him. He said the boy apparently had been taken into an apartment building where a woman was administering CPR. Paramedics from the fire department and Emergency Medical Services arrived and provided oxygen to the father to stabilize him and tried to engage him in conversation to keep him alert.

"He was responsive so we were able to, at least, get him up, get him to the stairs. He did say, 'My son, my son,' so he knew his son was involved or was in distress," Rowe said. "We were talking to him. He was moaning, but the only discernible thing that he said was 'My son.'"

Rowe said his understanding was that a snow plow had come up the street and had pushed snow back onto the bank, which then impacted the car's exhaust pipe.

Also, fire officials said a man found in a car with the engine running in Mattapan on Saturday evening died of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to media reports. The Boston Globe said officials believe the car's tailpipe was blocked by snow, allowing the gas to build up.
