Bloggings: Will this newspaper story appear on January 22, 2013 ...

In answer to the March 29 ID item by?my colleague and fellow blogger, Matt Kolken, who is not only a top level lawyer but a dedicated and passionate advocate for justice in the immigration system, and who has my highest respect, I would like to draw attention to the following newspaper story, which I happened to run across after reading Matt's powerful and eloquent argument against voting to re-elect President Obama:

"Washington, January 22, 2013

President Mitt Romney made his first public appearance on the day after his inauguration as the nation's 45th president, flanked by Vice-President Marco Rubio and by Kris Kobach, Lamar Smith and Joe Arpaio, the president's nominees for Attorney General, Secretary of Homeland Security and Director of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement "ICE". Stating that the presence of 12 million illegal aliens in this country was the most urgent problem facing the US, dwarfing all the others combined, the new president announced that his top priority would be reforming America's broken immigration system, something his predecessor had talked a great deal about doing but never taken any action to bring about.?

President Romney began his statement by saying that respect for the law has completely broken down in America, and can only be restored by the immediate removal of every single illegal alien, without exception. He also stated that our legal immigration system must be overhauled to reflect America's priorities, values, culture, and identity, especially use of the English language, which is now under imminent threat, due to our misguided and overly permissive immigration policies dating back to 1965.?

For this purpose, President Romney announced, he was directing his presumptive new Attorney General, Mr. Kobach, to draw up immigration reform legislation for introduction in the new Congress, which is now overwhelmingly Republican in both houses as the result of last November's election. This legislation, to be modelled on a bill which passed the House of Representatives in 2005 but never reached the Senate, known as HR 3447, and on the immigration law now in full effect in Alabama (which the US Supreme Court has just upheld in a 5-4 decision based on 10th Amendment grounds), will make "attrition" the official immigration policy of the United States of America, and encourage all illegal aliens to "self-deport", thereby hopefully saving the government hundreds of billions of dollars on enforcement money. However all illegals do not self-deport within a reasonable time, such as 60 to 90 days, will be removed by state as well as federal officials. States will be given the power to institute their own deportation hearings and to carry out removals in order better to assist the federal authorities.

Among other top priority immigration related legislative proposals which President Romney outlined was one which would take away birthright US citizenship from anyone who is unable to prove that his or her parents were both either lawful permanent residents of the US or US citizens at the time of his or her birth. This, law, the president emphasized, will be retroactive and will apply to all current US citizens, regardless of date of birth. The president added that he is instructing Mr. Kobach to assist in preparing a lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to overturn its landmark 1898 decision in Wong Kim Ark vs. US, which, the president said, takes an absurdly expansionist view of the 14th Amendment's guarantee of birthright citizenship.

'Liberal judicial activism' the president said, 'is bad for America in our century and it was bad for America in any century. This administration will act severely in order to stamp it out'. The president also announced a moratorium on all legal immigration, on national security grounds, until the 12 million illegals all return back home. The only exceptions, on a case by case basis, will be a limited number of science and math professionals who are fluent in English.

After the president's speech, the new ICE director, Joe Arpaio, made a few remarks about his plans to reform the immigration detention system. 'There's been a lot of screaming and yelling about conditions in this country's immigration jails',?Mr. Arpaio announced. 'We are going to put an end to that. These prisons are not hotels. In Arizona, we have shown that we know how to handle illegals.'

Vice-President Rubio concluded with some brief remarks thanking America's Hispanic and other minority and pro-immigrant voters for staying home or voting for third parties in record numbers in 2012, thereby enabling Mr. Romney to win the White House."

Jordan Mechner, Creator Of Prince Of Persia, Finds Original Source Code In His Dad?s Closet

photo-300x225Prince of Persia and Karateka, were two of the best action games of their era. Why? Because they gave us an inkling of what real, fluid graphical motion would look like in a few years' time and, more important, were pretty much amazing if you were used to the Atari 2600 and River Raid. I remember playing Karateka before school at age ten, chopping my way through enemies on my way to save my sweetie and then, a few years later, playing PoP. Both were amazing. Why? Because he created smooth, believable animation at eight frames per second on machines that were more suited to games like The Oregon Trail. He also created action games that led to realistic titles like Tekken that used real, human motion in order to add amazing realism. A funny thing happened about ten years ago. The creator of these games, Jordan Mechner, apparently lost the original PoP source code and hunted all over for it, asking former Broderbund employees and digging through old files. The files - stored on 3.5-inch floppy disks - contained the original machine code for the game. The only way to actually play the game, until today, was run an emulated, extracted ROM.

Spectacular brain images reveal simple wiring

Stunning new visuals of the brain reveal a deceptively simple pattern of organization in the wiring of this complex organ.

Instead of nerve fibers travelling willy-nilly through the brain like spaghetti, as some imaging has suggested, the new portraits reveal two-dimensional sheets of parallel fibers crisscrossing other sheets at right angles in a gridlike structure that folds and contorts with the convolutions of the brain.

    4. How conservatives lost faith in science

This same pattern appeared in the brains of humans, rhesus monkeys, owl monkeys, marmosets and galagos, researchers report Thursday in the journal Science.

"The upshot is the fibers of the brain form a 3-D grid and are organized in this exceptionally simple way," study leader Van Wedeen, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, told LiveScience. "This motif of crossing in three axes is the basic motif of brain tissue." [Inside the Brain: A Journey Through Time]

The organized brain
The surface of the brain contains about 40 billion nerve cells, each making about 1,000 connections in a pattern that brain researchers have yet to decipher, said Marsel Mesulam, the director of the Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center at Northwestern University. Mesulam, who was not involved in the study, called Wedeen's work "very exciting."

"There can be no more fundamental question in philosophy, in psychology," Mesulam told LiveScience. "The human brain is the single most complex device in the known universe, and it works by nerve cells talking to each other. If we can't figure out how they decide who to talk to and what they tell each other, we just don't understand how the brain functions."

Using a technique he developed called diffusion spectrum magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Wedeen traced the movement of water molecules along the intersections of brain fibers (the cellular projections that form the brain's communication network), tracking the orientation of each fiber at each crossing.

"What emerged was astonishing," Wedeen said. "What emerged was that the set of fibers that crossed a given fiber, invariably ? and that's a really strong invariably ? look like mutually parallel fibers all coming in like the teeth of a comb and crossing it in one direction." [See video of the brain structure]

Animal studies had suggested this pattern might exist, and researchers already knew that the nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain stem were organized in very structured parallels and perpendiculars even in humans (consider the long nerve fibers that run down the backbone and then branch out perpendicularly from the vertebrae). But it's difficult to get high-resolution scans of fiber connectivity in the human cortex, given that humans tend to become uncomfortable if left in an MRI scanner for more than 45 minutes or so, Wedeen said. For that reason, images of human brain connections have tended to look like tangled spaghetti, he said.

Wedeen and his colleagues scanned four types of primate brains from deceased animals, enabling them to image the brains for up to 48 hours, as well as brains from living human subjects using a new scanner that can achieve 10 times the resolution of conventional MRI machines. Using special software, the researchers then reconstructed three-dimensional images of the brain-fiber pathways.

"Looking across multiple species, it emerged that the pattern was substantially similar," Wedeen said. "When you went from primates with small brains to primates with big brains ? the rules were the same, but they were being applied more diversely and with more layers in the larger, more complex brains."

Adaptable brain
The finding of clear up-down, front-back and side-to-side organization in the brain makes sense, Wedeen said, given that the brain has had to rewire both evolutionarily (to form the specialized brains humans boast today) and during its lifetime (as it grows and learns, for example). If the organization of communication were chaotic, that wouldn't work.

"It's like rewiring your basement at random," Wedeen said. "First thing that happens, house burns down, you die."

In other words, adapting a complexly wired brain that will still allow the next generation to survive would be next to impossible.

"If you try to picture what would happen if you tried to turn one spaghetti brain into a different spaghetti brain, you realize you would need an impossibly knowledgably intelligent designer standing above the brain and rewiring it," Wedeen said.

With an organized grid structure, however, evolution can easily build on what came before ? adding in a more complex forebrain in humans versus our monkey relatives, for example.

More work should be done to link the imaging methods of Wedeen with traditional neuroanatomy methods to confirm the findings, Mesulam said. Wedeen plans to expand the map of the human brain into more detail. It's also important to understand the relationship between a brain's structure and its function, he said. Understanding the structure of a typical brain would ultimately help scientists comprehend what happens when brain development goes wrong, as in Alzheimer's or mental illness.

"Say somebody comes to you with their 2-year-old and they say, 'My 2-year-old is just not looking me in the eyes.' Is this the first sign of Asperger's or just an individual difference?" Wedeen said. "You'd know how to begin. You'd know what you were doing."

'Titanic' Looks 'Spectacular' In 3-D, James Cameron Says

Film's 3-D conversion 'takes it to a whole different level,' director tells MTV News at U.K. premiere of re-release.

Nearly 15 years after "Titanic" became the biggest movie ever to grace the silver screen, director James Cameron has expanded his blockbuster into the third dimension.

On April 4, "Titanic" sets sail in 3-D after a painstaking conversion that Cameron believes enhances the picture's overall effect. MTV News spoke with the director in London, on the red carpet for the U.K. premiere of the re-release, which hits theaters days before the 100th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

"It's really a dream come true to get this film back into cinema because it just has a whole different effect on people when they take three hours out of their life to just sit and have the unbroken experience and let the story take them along," Cameron said. "It can be quite a profoundly emotional experience, and you're not going to get that watching it on video. The 3-D just enhances the whole thing. It takes it to a whole different level. "

Cameron decided to begin the process in 2005, while he was prepping his next ambitious project, "Avatar."

"I was pretty convinced at that time that 3-D was really going to transform the cinema experience. I wanted cinema owners, the exhibitors, to embrace the conversion to digital projection, so that there'd be a place to show 3-D movies," Cameron said. "I was thinking of 'Avatar,' but I was also saying, 'Look, we can do films like "Titanic." We can take "Jaws," "Star Wars," whatever your favorite movies are, we can convert them to 3-D and give them a whole new life.' So we started doing test to see what a conversion of 'Titanic' would look like. We did a minute and a half of it, and it looked spectacular. "

The 3-D re-release offered Cameron the opportunity to reflect on what made "Titanic" a worldwide sensation. Cameron said he feels that it didn't have everything to do with the movie's young star Leonardo DiCaprio.

"Women could relate to it, not just because of the Leo-mania thing, but because a lot of young women struggle with the sense of identity in societal expectation. The character of Rose was really written very much about those ideas," Cameron said. "I think it was a simplification after the fact that [DiCaprio] is why women were so attracted to the movie."

Check out everything we've got on "Titanic."

(AP) ? A puppy named after one of the world's biggest pop stars could set the world's record for tiniest dog.

Animal rescuers in Northern California say the female Dachshund mix, named Beyonce, was so small at birth that she could fit into a spoon. At two weeks, she's about the size of a business card.

The Grace Foundation, based in El Dorado County, says animal control picked up Beyonce's pregnant mother, and she gave birth to a litter of five on March 8.

Beyonce was the last one delivered, and was born without a heartbeat. Veterinarians managed to revive her through chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

The foundation says she'll be ready for adoption in about two weeks.

Meanwhile, it has submitted an application to Guinness World Records for world's smallest dog.

What's keeping vets from getting work

Rachel Mummey / for msnbc.com

Tyson Akers was turned down for a security job with the Iowa National Guard in the midst of a 13-month job search. The veteran juggles going to school full time at Iowa State University while raising two young sons with his wife, Amanda.

By Allison Linn

Tyson Akers joined the Marines straight out of high school and spent more than eight years in the infantry, including four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When he left the military in February 2011 because he wanted more time at home with his young children, he knew any civilian job would be different than what he?d done in the Marines.

?Your job was to go out and be on the front line and pray to God nothing happened to you,? he said. ?It?s hard to translate that over to the civilian world.?

But Akers, 29, didn?t count on a job search that has lasted more than a year, leaving him demoralized and even questioning his decision to leave the Marines.

?You start thinking to yourself if it?s even possible to get a job once you?re out,? he said.

While older veterans generally have a relatively low jobless rate, the unemployment rate for veterans who have served in the post-9/11 era averaged more than 12 percent last year, compared with under 9 percent for the general population, according to government data out last week.?

The problem of veteran unemployment is widely recognized. President Barack Obama has referred to it frequently and just last month pledged to get more veterans back to work.

"They've already risked their lives defending America,? he said. ?They should have the opportunity to rebuild America."

With the U.S. making plans to withdraw from Afghanistan and possibly shrink the military, thousands more young veterans like Akers are likely to be looking for work in the coming months and years.

Yet there are plenty of roadblocks preventing veterans from getting civilian jobs, including a lack of job-seeking skills and a mismatch between military experience and civilian requirements.

?Hard to translate?
Younger veterans especially may lack the experience crafting a resume or handling a job interview. And after emerging from years in the jargon-filled military culture, they may have a hard time explaining how their military experience would benefit a civilian employer.

?They have a difficult time translating their military cultural language into civilian cultural language,? said Randy Plunkett, director of community and government outreach for military.com, a website aimed at the military community. ?They undersell themselves. They don?t see and have a good handle on how to self-promote (and) how to articulate the skills they bring to the table.?

Akers, who lives in State Center, Iowa, thought that it wouldn?t be too hard to get a job as a security guard while he attended Iowa State University full time with support from the GI Bill.

Instead, over the past 13 months he?s endured rejection after rejection as employers told him that they had more qualified candidates. His wife, Amanda, said one prospective employer even told him his deployments didn?t count as security experience.

Recently, he got a break: A job interview with another former Marine at a security company run by other veterans.

He found out this week that he had gotten a security position, starting at 20 hours a week and paying $9.50 an hour.?Although he had hoped to secure a supervisor position, at least it's a start.

Even companies that actively seek out veterans say it can be tough to get them hired.

Jim Barr, vice president of government relations with Ryder, said the trucking company has made a point of trying to hire veterans who drove or worked on trucks in the military. But to drive for Ryder, veterans need a civilian commercial driving license, and requirements vary by state.

Some require hundreds of hours of training, and military experience may not count. In other cases, Barr said, the veterans may be able to waive the training but have trouble getting a truck for the test.

?They sound like kind of minor barriers, but if you don?t have the truck to take the test with, you can?t take the test,? Barr said.

States including Washington, Utah, Colorado and Texas have been working to remove some of the licensing barriers.

Eddie Crosby, 36, served in the military from 1996 to 2000 and then re-enlisted from 2004 until 2010. He worked as a military truck mechanic and driver and trained for dealing with chemical spills. He has been surprised he has been unable to translate his experience into a civilian job.

He used the GI Bill to go to civilian truck driving school. But even after he got his commercial license, he said many companies were looking for someone with more experience on the road.

To save money, he moved to Hermiston, Ore., where he?s living with his fianc? in a 26-foot camp trailer on his family?s property. He is about to start a part-time, minimum-wage job at a potato chip factory.

?I loved my military service, I really did,? Crosby said.

But it?s hard to find himself, at age 36, scrounging for entry-level jobs.

?Everybody that I graduated high school with, they?re 10 years on a job, and here I am struggling to pump gas, you know?? he said.

Slipping through the cracks
Experts are seeing some of the biggest disconnects for veterans with medical experience and training.

One issue is that a military medic may end up doing advanced work that may not translate directly to a credential in civilian life, said Steve Gonzalez, assistant director of the American Legion Economic Division. It can then be tough to figure out how to apply that experience toward a civilian medical license or credential.

There also are legitimate differences between medical work you do in the military and in civilian life, said veteran Ben Chlapek, deputy chief at the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District in Missouri. A medic who served in combat may not have experience with common civilian issues such as drug abuse, domestic abuse and pediatric patients.

Follow the story of Staff Sgt. Charles Weaver over the past ten years, from 2002 when he had been a soldier of Operation Iraqi Freedom to today - having returned back home to the United States, but now fighting to be a productive and employed individual.? NBC News' Tom Brokaw reports 'Hiring our Heroes' on Sunday, March 25th, at 7pm/6c.?

?Soldiers rarely deliver babies,? Chlapek said.

He said some potentially good candidates slip through the cracks when they realize they can?t get a job right away, or one that pays as well as their military job did.

?A lot of times they?ll call us or come in, and then they?ll disappear,? he said.

Even when the skills transfer directly, it can be tough to juggle military and civilian careers.

Todd Fredricks, 46, of Athens, Ohio, always dreamed of having his own rural medical practice, but he also wanted to serve in the military. As an Army flight surgeon in the reserves, he deployed to the Balkans once and to Iraq three times, most recently in 2011.

The transitions made it impossible to keep up a medical practice, and he now works full-time in a hospital in West Virginia.

?I practice the medicine that I do now because it?s the easiest way I can enter and leave service,? he said.

Peter Leon, an administrative nursing supervisor with Panorama City Medical Center in California, also considers himself lucky: As an RN, he was able to easily transition back and forth between his job stateside and his military deployments as a reservist.

Leon, 44, last deployed to Iraq in 2008, and now that he has a young daughter he no longer volunteers to go overseas. But he misses his military duty.

?I wish I could go back and deploy again,? he said. ?I feel more useful out there than I do here.?

There are other success stories. J.P. Morgan, 36, served in the military as an aircraft electrician from 1994 to 1998.

In 2004, he rejoined the military as a reservist, partly because he would get additional training he could never afford as a civilian. That has allowed him to get the certification he needed to become an aircraft maintenance technician for Southwest Airlines.

Morgan, who lives in Dallas, left the reserves in 2010.

?The military ? it was wonderful to me in that respect,? he said.

(This story has been updated from an earlier version to reflect new information that Tyson Akers has landed a job.)
