The buildup to anyone's wedding is astronomical. We all talk about how we want it to be the most special day of our lives, but the reality of it is that few of us actually get to enjoy the day. Our nerves are shot hoping that everything goes correctly and after the ceremony, you simply cannot get one second alone with your new spouse. However, the honeymoon is a completely different story!
While I can obviously remember my wedding day itself, many of the events that happened that day are a complete blur. We still watch the wedding video and look at each other as though we are seeing things for the very first time. By the time the reception was over, we were both looking forward to our honeymoon. I knew it was going to be special, but I could never have dreamed of the trip we were able to have.
Instead of spending a lot of money flying abroad, we decided to stay local and see as much of the country as we could over a two-week period. Living on the East Coast, we figured the perfect place to start was South Beach in Miami. We stayed at a beachfront hotel in the center of town and it was the perfect choice. We had breakfast at the News Cafe, we did a late lunch of appetizers during happy hour at Tequila Chica's and dinner that night was spectacular as we headed over to Espanola Way and grabbed a bite to eat at several different restaurants.
In all, we spent two days in South Beach, then it was off to Arizona. We had three nights together at the MII Amo Spa. If we had known how spectacular this resort would be, we probably would have spent a week there. Between the relaxing massage and general "us" time, we could not have asked for a better way to start our lives together. It seemed to be the perfect break between the fast-paced time of our wedding, Miami and our next stop.
After being spoiled at the spa for three days, we headed to wine country for a seven-day journey. We traveled throughout California, staying mostly at bed and breakfast places. However, do not let the term fool you, as most of these establishments would put four-star hotels to shame. Every vineyard offered a tasting, and we sometimes stayed for lunch. For anyone loving wine, a tour through Sonoma is highly recommended.
Our last day came far too soon, and our tour across the country unfortunately ended with a trip back East. The saving grace of having to go home was the first class seats the airline clerk upgraded us to when she found out we were honeymooners. Our last treat was flying back in true style as we sipped on champagne and talked about the wonderful start we had to our new life together.
