The University of Akron has plucked its next football coach from the most famous coaching family in college football history.
Terry Bowden announced via a YouTube video on Thursday that he will be the new Zips head football coach.?
Bowden, 54, will replace Rob Ianello, who managed just two wins in his two seasons at the helm. Ianello was let go by the univeristy on Nov. 26.?
Bowden, the son of legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, is best known for guiding Auburn to an unbeaten season in 1993.
The Tigers were ineligible to play for a National Championship that year due to NCAA rule violations committed by previous head coach Pat Dye.
Bowden compiled a 47-17-1 record in six years at Auburn. He most recently was coaching at the University of North Alabama, where he compiled a 29-9 record in three seasons. In early December, Bowden had signed a one-year contract extension with UNA for $103,000.
Bowden is returning to his roots of sorts. He was an assistant under Zips coach Gerry Faust in 1986. Akron has not had a winning season since 2005.
Bowden's brother Tommy was also a successful college football coach in stints at Tulane and Clemson.
