It?s the second time around at New Hampshire Motor Speedway as the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup championship continues this week. Will a Chase driver win at The Magic Mile? The odds are favorable seeing as every fall race since the creation of the Chase system has been won by a Chase driver.
Group A
Jeff Gordon ? Gordon has 3 wins but it?s been a long time since the last one, 26 races ago back in the fall of ?98. The good news though is he racked up 10 top-5?s during that time, including 5 2nd place finishes.
Bench Pick: Jimmie Johnson ? One of Johnson?s better tracks, he has 3 wins here, including a sweep of both races in ?03. On the other hand, he finished a lap down in the fall race last year and the recent race back in July.
Group B
Ryan Newman ? Newman picked up the win back in July, making him the 4th active driver with 3 wins at this track, the others being Gordon, Johnson, and Kurt Busch. Newman dominated much of the July race, leading 119 of the 301 laps.
Brad Keselowski ? 7 top-10s in the last 8 races, including 5 top-5s with 2 wins. Keselowski started the July race in 5th but a blown tire at about midway through the race resulted in a crash into the wall the put him 44 laps down after repairs.
Bench Pick: Joey Logano ? Overall performance in 6 starts at the track is 3 top-10s with 2 top-5s, including an ?09 win, his first, and so far only, career NSCS win.
Bench Pick: Clint Bowyer ? Bowyer won last year?s fall race, leading the most laps with 177 laps out of 300. This race was also where Bowyer?s car failed the post-race inspection for being too high and Bowyer was penalized 150 points, effectively eliminating his championship chances.
Group C
Regan Smith ? If you have some picks left for David Ragan, then use him as New Hampshire Motor Speedway is an intermediate track. But if you?re low or out of starts for Ragan, then try Smith. Smith is 3rd highest of the Group C drivers and just slightly better than Paul Menard for average finishes in the last 4 races.
Bench Pick: David Ragan ? Ragan has 3 top-10?s at intermediate tracks this season, including a 2nd place finish at Charlotte, and got the pole at Texas in the spring. He also survived all the cautions a couple of weeks ago at Richmond and finished in 4th place. Unfortunately for me, I have only 1 chance left to start Ragan and I?ll save it for either Charlotte or Texas.
