Although environmental factors may play a role in the development of colorectal cancer, some cases can be traced to genetics.
The American Cancer Society estimates five to 10 percent of all colorectal cancers are based upon specific genetic factors.
You could be at a hereditary risk for colorectal cancer if you have the following risk factors:
-A family or personal history of colorectal cancer before age 50
-A family or personal history of colorectal polyps
-A family or personal history of uterine cancer before age 50
-A family or personal history of stomach, urinary tract or brain cancers
-A family member who has tested positive for a specific genetic mutation (APC, MUTYH, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6 ot PMS2)
Some symptoms of colorectal cancers include:
-Rectal bleeding
-Blood in stool or toilet after a bowl movement
-Prolonged diarrhea
-A change in the shape or size of your stool
-Abdominal pain or cramping in your lower stomach
-A feeling of discomfort or urge to have a bowl movement when there is no need
