My Review

Willie had a problem that no one, not even his Doctor could figure out what was wrong. His feet were so slippery his socks and shoes would not stay on his feet. So finally special shoes were ordered for Willie, and his feet would not be slippery while wearing them. I really felt sorry for Willie. He just did not want to wear those shoes, even if they did help him not to slip and slide. He didn?t want to go through the embarrassment of everyone at school and everyone he would be around to and from school laughing at his stupid shoes. Just what was he going to do about these shoes? Could he really wearing them to school, or would he rather slip and slide his way around? Would mom make him wear them, or would she understand?

This is a really cute story teaching children about peer pressure, and teaching then what can happen to them when they worry too much. It shows a child that is ok to be different, and especially when it something that will be helpful to them. This book is well written and simple for children to understand. And the graphics are awesome! What is a children?s book without really good graphics? They are essential to the story, making the story more dramatic so the child can better understand what he or she is reading. The pictures themselves tell the story in a well illustrated book as this one.

Since all children will face being different at some time or another, I feel this book would be good for any child. It is wonderful to have books like Willie?s Slippery Feet to read to you child even before he faces being different around his or her friends. And the pictures will make the lesson more clear for them as well

Thanks to Tribute Books for providing an e-copy for me to read. The opinions and the review are mine only. I was not expected or required to write a positive review of this book.
And just so you know, the pictures in the e-copy are great, but run out an purchase a print book and they will look even more awesome!

Mobiles ?may cause brain cancer?..now they tell us ? Follow The Money

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13608444

The World Health Organization?s cancer research agency says mobile phones are ?possibly carcinogenic?.

A review of evidence suggests an increased risk of a malignant type of brain cancer cannot be ruled out.

However, any link is not certain ? they concluded that it was ?not clearly established that it does cause cancer in humans?.

A cancer charity said the evidence was too weak to draw strong conclusions from.

A group of 31 experts has been meeting in Lyon, France, to review human evidence coming from epidemiological studies.

They said they looked at all relevant human studies of people using mobile phones and exposure to electromagnetic fields in their workplace.

The WHO?s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) can give mobile phones one of five scientific labels: carcinogenic, probably carcinogenic, possibly carcinogenic, not classifiable or not carcinogenic.

It concluded that mobiles should be rated as ?possibly carcinogenic? because of a possible link with a type of brain cancer ? glioma.

Ed Yong, head of health information at Cancer Research UK, said: ?The WHO?s verdict means that there is some evidence linking mobile phones to cancer but it is too weak to draw strong conclusions from.

FAQ: What's the future of OpenOffice.org?

June 03, 2011

By Chris Kanaracus | IDG News Service

Oracle suddenly announced Wednesday it was submitting the codebase for OpenOffice.org to the Apache Software Foundation, ending speculation about the open-source productivity suite's fate following Oracle's recent announcement it would be transitioned to a "solely community-based project."

OpenOffice.org will start off in the ASF's incubation program as a "podling" -- the first stage in a multistep process toward becoming a top-level project within the organization.

[ Discover what's new in business applications with InfoWorld's Technology: Applications newsletter. | Get the latest insight on the tech news that matters from InfoWorld's Tech Watch blog. ]

There are many questions remaining about OpenOffice.org's future, however, such as how it will co-exist with LibreOffice, the offshoot project formed last year by a number of OpenOffice.org community members after a falling-out with Oracle.

Here's a look at some of the top issues regarding Oracle's decision, and where OpenOffice.org goes from here.

Q: Will OpenOffice.org thrive or flounder at Apache?

Some interested parties think OpenOffice can do very well there.

"We should all be excited to see OpenOffice move to a foundation with the stature and track-record of Apache," said Rob Weir, ODF (Open Document Format) architect at IBM, in a blog post. OpenOffice.org as well as IBM's own Lotus Symphony Suite, which is based on OpenOffice.org code, support the ODF standard.

Apache hosts a diverse array of successful open-source technologies, such as the Tomcat server and Hadoop data-processing framework, Weir noted. "These diverse projects are run according to meritocratic development process, a tried and tested governance model, strong shared technical infrastructure, a pragmatic, commercially-friendly open source license, and a set of social conventions known as the 'Apache Way.'"

Hopefully, OpenOffice.org at Apache "will be viewed as a way to bring together some of the threads that have separated from the main project trunk over the last few years," said Bob Sutor, vice president for open systems and Linux at IBM, in a blog post. "This is a place where people can get together under one virtual roof and turn OpenOffice.org into what people always thought it could be."

Ultimately, as with all open-source projects, OpenOffice.org "will sink or swim on the basis of contributions," Redmonk analyst Stephen O'Grady said via email.

LibreOffice has seen decent uptake, with Linux distributions such as Ubuntu adopting it at the expense of OpenOffice.org, he noted. "That siphons off some of the available energy in the space."

But OpenOffice.org is important to companies like IBM, which users can expect will make substantial investments in continued development of the codebase. That "gives it a good chance to be viable moving forward," O'Grady said.

Q: Why did Oracle give OpenOffice.org to the Apache Foundation and not some other group, such as the Document Foundation, the group that oversees LibreOffice?

"Only Oracle can answer this, but it is clear from past history that Oracle prefers to work with foundations that have both history and long-term experience working with enterprises," O'Grady said.

How Weiner Turned a Problem Into a Crisis

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Anthony Weiner would be having a much better week if he could establish, beyond a reasonable doubt, that he wears either old-fashioned boxer shorts or classic tighty-whiteys.

In politics, it's pretty much an immutable rule that if they're talking about your underwear, you have a problem. Weiner, a liberal Democrat who represents parts of Brooklyn and Queens, surely knows this. But he doesn't seem to grasp the other rule about how you should at least try to keep a problem from becoming a crisis.

Let me interject that I'm going to try to get through this column with as few juvenile double entendres as possible. There will be no jokes, for example, about the congressman's last name.

So here's what happened: Late last week, the conservative website BigGovernment reported that someone using Weiner's account on the social network Twitter had sent a message consisting of a picture of a man's, shall we say, groin area. The angle from which the photo was taken suggests it is a self-portrait. The man is wearing a pair of those hybrid boxer briefs.

The picture was addressed to a 21-year-old female student from the Seattle area who is one of Weiner's more than 54,000 "followers" on Twitter. Days later, the woman wrote in the New York Daily News that she had never even met Weiner, much less had any "inappropriate exchanges" with him. But this clarifying information came far too late to save Weiner from himself, and now the issue has become one of credibility.

Weiner's response was that his Twitter account had somehow been hacked by someone who wanted to play a "prank" or commit a "hoax." But he didn't say that the crotch in the picture was somebody else's.

The long holiday weekend gave Weiner a bit of a break, but also gave the story -- and his not-quite-ironclad denial -- time to ferment. When everybody came back to work, reporters began asking simple follow-up questions, such as, "So that's somebody else's crotch, right?" This might have been a one-day story, a minor episode -- the picture, while suggestive, doesn't depict anything you wouldn't see on a beach where men wear Speedos. But Weiner's shifting, complicated, finely parsed explanations make this a bigger deal.

He insisted someone else had sent the photo. But when asked if he had contacted authorities to launch an investigation into the hacking of his Twitter account, Weiner said that he had not. The police had more important things to worry about, he said, so he was conducting his own investigation with the help of a private firm.

Book Review: The New Small | Matt About Business

The New Small

If you?ve read my blog, you likely know that I am a huge proponent of enabling small businesses through technology. Unfortunately, so many of the ?why-dos? and ?how-tos? that you find in books like these are not connected to the real world. You either get high-level vagueness or low-level, step-by-step details; you never get to see the concepts in action in real life.

And that?s just where ?The New Small? hits it out of the ballpark. Every concept and approach in this book is demonstrated through real-world use. It?s these kinds of example case studies that connect with small business owners and make the possibilities and opportunities come alive.

I highly recommend this book for those who want to see how concepts such as cloud computing (online software) and social media work successfully in the real world.

From Amazon.com:

Product Description

A small seafood restaurant attracts new customers with virtually no marketing budget. An iPad case manufacturer generates more than $1M in revenue in four months with only four employees. A voiceover company is able to connect thousands of artists with opportunities, all without expensive hardware and software. A law firm increases access to key information while dramatically reducing technology-related costs and risks.

And these four companies are hardly unique. A new breed of small businesses is using Software as a Service (SaaS), free and open source software, social media and networks, mobility, cloud computing, and other emerging technologies to do things simply not possible even five years ago. In The New Small, you?ll discover how these companies creatively and intelligently use technology to:

  • Reach new customers
  • Reduce costs
  • Increase internal collaboration and communication
  • Create flexible work environments

Rife with profiles from a wide variety of industries, The New Small offers pragmatic advice and lessons about how small businesses are harnessing the power of emerging technologies. It?s a must-read for small business owners-and those thinking about starting their own shops.
